Student teams up with Invisible Children to

make difference

Rep. Peter Visclosky. I am committed

to #ZeroLRA.
Senior Mallorie Oetman is fundraising
for Invisible Children, a social activism
organization that seeks to end the
practices of the LRA (Lords Resistance
Army), which includes abductions and
abuse of children, and forcing them to
serve as soldiers in Uganda. This time,
her goal was to get 250 dollars in
donations.
I am just fundraising through posting

it, Oetman said. A lot of my friends
on Facebook and my families on
Facebook know I worked for them this summer. So they will be more likely to give me
money.
Oetman interned at Invisible Children in San Diego, Calif. this summer, starting from the
end of May until the middle of August. She worked at the development department on
donation and gifts that are given to the organization. Being actively involved with Invisible
Children, fundraising also becomes part of her life. She experienced her first 100 dollars
donation two years ago, and the result was promising.
It was around the time of Halloween, Oetman laughed. I went around the dorms in a
custom, and I basically told people what Invisible Childrens mission was and asked them if
they want to give a donation. I got a hundred from doing that, which was pretty
awesome.
On her social media sites, she tagged herself as committing to #ZeroLRA. This is a
campaign that called out for political help such as contacting representatives and the head
of the States due to the disagreement between Invisible Children and the U.S government.
Their slogan is We stand for nothing. No child soilders. No killing. No war.
Basically they are trying to get members out of this child solider group, Oetman said.
What they did was several different things. One of them is defection fliers. They drop
fliers in the bush area so they know they are occupying and on those fliers they give them
message like If you leave LRA, you will be saved.
Other than sending fliers, Oetman said Invisible Children does radio broadcasting as well.
They send exactly the same message to the LRA but via radio.
Two months ago, Invisible Children came to the university for their second visit and had a
presentation in Hardy bBasement. They brought a Uganda girl named Innoscenc who was
saved and let her talked about her experience. Invisible Children has done this kind of
presentation nationwide several times.
They have different groups like three or four people along with a person from Uganda
whos been affected by this conflict, Oetman said. They go around the United States and
talked about their missions.
In 2012, the universitys administration helped Oetman attend one of these conferences in
Washington D.C. She received about 300 to 400 dollars in donations from student senate
and a 200 dollar donation from the Multicultural Activity Council.
This summer, at one of the conferences, she was happpy to see two familiar faces from
the university, Aisha Foday and Giuliana Ruiz-Moreno. According to Oetman, Fodey and
Ruiz-Moreno were also working on their own donation for Invisible Children this fall.
