    CreutzfeldtJakobdiseaseisafataldegenerativedisease
    ofthecentralnervoussystem.CreutzfeldtJakobdiseaseoccursthroughouttheworldat
    anincidenceofonepersoninamillionhowever,amongcertainpopulations,suchas
    LibyanJews,ratesaresomewhathigher.Thediseasecommonlyoccursinadults
    betweentheagesof40and70,althoughsomeyoungadultshavebeenstrickenwith
    thedisease.Bothmenandwomenareaffectedequally.Theonsetofthediseaseis
    usuallycharacterizedbyvaguepsychiatricorbehavioralchanges,whicharefollowed
    withinweeksormonthsbyaprogressivedementiathatisoftenaccompaniedby
    abnormalvisionandinvoluntarymovements.Thereisnoknowncureforthedisease,
    whichisusuallyfatalwithinayearoftheonsetofsymptoms.
    Thediseasewasfirstdescribedinthe1920sbytheGermanneurologistsHansGerhard
    CreutzfeldtandAlfonsMariaJakob.CreutzfeldtJakobdiseaseissimilartoother
    neurodegenerativediseasessuchaskuru,ahumandisorder,andscrapie,whichoccurs
    insheepandgoats.Allthreediseasesaretypesoftransmissiblespongiform
    encephalopathies,socalledbecauseofthecharacteristicspongelikepatternof
    neuronaldestructionthatleavesbraintissuefilledwithholes.
    Therearenocurrentdrugsorcuresforthisdisease,andthedrugsbeingdeveloped
    havenobenefits.Theonlythingsuggestedistomakethepatientascomfortableas
    possible.
