My Definition of Composition: Composition is telling a story by imposing a
structure (via compositional tools) on the focal elements in the frame.
Step 1: Find your main focal element.

Step 2: Impose structure on the focal element by using the tools of composition.
Tools of composition:

6) Foreground, midground, background relationship.

7) Shape (curve, triangle)
8) Leading the eye (literal line, layering of elements, light/dark, color, motion
blur)
9) Shooting through (framing)
10)
Diagonals
11)
Counterpoint (between different visual elements)
12)
Visual anchors (amidst the chaos)
13)
Patterns

Step 3: Is the structure balanced?

Reasoning for the Tools:

1) Foreground: Placing interesting elements throughout the scene
(foreground, midground, background) that complement each other and
creates a cohesive story.
Find angle that accentuates shape, line.
2) Shape:
Curve as a leading line.
Triangle creates a natural vanishing point with two lines; eye
naturally wants to follow the lines and move into the scene.
3) Leading the Eye:
Literal lines
Progression of elements
Light and dark
Color (cool and warm tones)
Motion blur (e.g., water)
Layering
4) Shooting Through [Framing]:
Creates depth
5) Diagonals:
Leading lines
Distorted lines at the edge appear diagonal to converge inward.

6) Counterpoint:
Different points of interest that the viewers eye can bounce
between and stay within the composition.
Meaningful relationship between the different elements.
Use selective dodge/burn to emphasize or de-emphasize visual
elements.
7) Visual Anchors:
Prominent figure that grounds the scene in spite of the
surrounding chaos.
Allows viewer to explore the scene, but the viewer will return to
the anchor.
8) Patterns:
Repetitive elements
9) Into the Sun:
Halo effect
Shadows
10)
Reflections:
Can break the symmetry created by reflection.
