'Advocacy' means active support of an idea or cause etc.; especially the act of pleading or arguing for
something. Educators are in a position where their ability to advocate for students is a critical part of their work.
It is also extremely important that they do this in an appropriate and diplomatic fashion, especially when
invoking legal issues.
Write a letter of advocacy (minimum 3-4 paragraphs, double spaced, 12 point font) advocating for a
student. This could be hypothetical or something you have actually experienced in real life. We would like
you to incorporate one or more of the following legal protections you wrote about in 8a: IDEIA, ADA,
FERPA, Lau v Nichols, Plyler vs. Doe, or Mandatory Reporting. We would like you to apply your understanding
of the legal protections available to this student.
You write the letter to your principal, counselor or supervising teacher so that someone else with authority can
do something about the situation, even if it is simply to meet with you and advise you accordingly.
