Chapter Two

Ava Eichler, Kritika Pokharel and Frances Miller

Summary
Dill leaves Maycomb in September. Scout is happy to start school. When
going to school, Jem tells Scout not to bother him during class or recess.
In class Ms Caroline, Scouts teacher, reads them a book about cats and
no one enjoys it. Then she tells Scout to read and is not happy to see
that she can read and tells her to tell Atticus to not teach her anymore.
During recess, she tells Jem that she doesnt like school. Later she
writes something in cursive and her teacher tells her to print. She
blames Calpurnia for that because she made her write. Ms Caroline tells
everyone to take out their lunch and when Walter cunningham doesnt
she tries to lend him a quarter. Scout tries to tell her that he wont take
something he cant pay back and that she is shaming him but she gets
wiped by a ruler instead. To end the chapter Scout witnessed Miss
Caroline feel bad at the end of the day and then headed home.

Character List
Scout-The Narrator of To Kill A Mockingbird who starts the first grade.
Jem-Scouts older brother who was in fifth grade.
Miss Caroline Fisher-The first grade teacher who doesnt like that Scout
can read already.
Walter Cunningham-A boy in Scouts class who is very poor and could
not buy lunch that day.
Atticus-The children's father who works all day but helps Scout read at
night.
Calpurnia- Mother-like housekeeper.

Significant Event
In chapter two of To Kill a Mockingbird a significant event that
happens is Scout starts school. This would be considered a significant
event because Scout finally can make friends and isnt home all day like
she used to be. Scout loves to learn and is very excited about showing
off her reading skills. Scout is also very excited for school because when
she sees Jem and the other kids playing in the schoolyard it looks like a
lot of fun.
