Scout-Jean Louise Finch, Narrator, sister of Jem, is an exceptional reader.
Jem-Jeremy Atticus Finch, brother of Scout, premenit left arm injury.
Dill-Charles Baker Harris, Lives in Meridian Mississippi, but stays at the Finchs neighbors
every summer, very short, 7 years old.
Atticus- Atticus Finch, father of both Scout and Jem, Lawyer and state legislative representative.
Boo Radley-Real name Arthur Radley, was once part of a gang, no one really knows what he
looks like.
Calpurnia-The cook and housekeeper for the Finch family, African American woman, the one
who taught Scout to read and write.
Aunt Rachel-Aunt to Dill, the neighbor of the Finchs.

Summary
In chapter 1 there is a lot of background information given. It tells how the main character's
family gets to Maycomb County, where they live. It also tells how before it was a tradition to
stay on the family homestead, but Atticus did not and went to Maycomb. Maycomb was a small
dreary town where people ambled along, with broken down roads and buildings. It then tells
about how they met Dill. Dill was a small, short, runty boy, from Meridian, who had watched
many movies. He stayed every summer. Dill was fascinated with the Radley Place. Which was a
scary house with many rumours surrounding it. The Radleys had a son named Arthur, nicknamed
Boo. Boo never came out of his house, and Dill wanted to get him to. So Dill dares Jem to touch
the Radley house. After a few days Jem gets up the courage and runs and touches the house.
Nothing happens except the slight flicker of an inside shutter.

Significant event
The most significant event in chapter 1 was when Dill came to Maycomb for
the summer. He made friend's with Scout and Jem. At the end of the
chapter Dill dared Jem to touch the Radley's house. It moves the story
forward by influencing Jems interest in the house and making him want
to get Boo to come out.
