Chapter 5 review

Summary
In chapter five of To Kill a Mockingbird written by Harper Lee, Jem and Dill start
growing closer, making Scout feel left out. Scout then spends lots of her time with
a neighbor, Miss Maudie Atkinson. They talk about Boo Radley and how he is the
victim of a rough father, or thats Miss Maudies theory. She talks about her view of
how Boo was as a child and what he might be like now. Meanwhile, Atticus is
scolding the children about trying to put a note in the window of Boos house, and
for them to also stop playing the Boo Radley game that they had come up with.

Chapter 5 character list


Scout (Jean Louise Finch) Narrator of the story. She is between ages 6 to 9, but she tells the story as an
adult.
Atticus Finch: Maycomb attorney and state legislative representative who is assigned to represent Tom
Robinson. A widower, Atticus is a single parent to two children: Jem and Scout.
Jem (Jeremy Atticus Finch) Scout's older brother who ages from 10 to 13 during the story.
Calpurnia: The Finch's' African American housekeeper. She grew up at Finch's Landing and moved with
Atticus to Maycomb. She is the closest thing to a mother that Scout and Jem have.
Boo Radley (Mr. Arthur Radley) The mysterious neighbor who piques the children's interest. They've
never seen him and make a game of trying to get him to come outside
Dill (Charles Baker Harris) Jem and Scout's neighborhood friend. Living in Meridian, Mississippi, Dill
spends every summer with his aunt, Miss Rachel Haverford.
Miss Maudie Atkinson One of Maycomb's most open-minded citizens, Miss Maudie lives across the street
from Jem and Scout.

Significant event
In Chapter 5 of To Kill a Mockingbird a main event in the chapter is when
Dill and Jem write a note a to give to Boo Radley. In the note they said for
Radley to come outside of his house and they would get ice cream
together. They tried to put it through the window of his house but when
they attempt do it they are caught by Atticus. Atticus then told them to stay
away from the Radley's house until they were invited. They were also told
that they were not allowed to play the game they had made up about what
happens inside of the Radley house.
