P2 Solutions to problems

7. A steel plate of width 120 mm and of thickness 20 mm is bent to a circular arc of radius 10 m. Determine the
maximum stress induced and the bending moment which will produce the maximum stress. (Take E 2 105
N/mm2 and the moment of inertia of the plate about the N.A., I = bd 3 / 12.) [200 N/mm 2, 1.6 kNm]
Ans. The steel plate is 20 mm thick (d) and 120 mm
wide (b). We do not know how long the steel plate is
and we don't need it. A picture of the problem is shown.
The maximum stress max is given by max

E
ymax ,
R

where ymax is the maximum position from the neutral

axis (N.A.). The dashed line (and curve) in the figure is the N.A, so it is clear that ymax = 10 mm. R is given to be
10 m or 10000 mm. So we calculate max

2 105 N/mm2
10 mm 200 N / mm2 .
10000 mm

The maximum bending moment M max can be seen from the bending formula : M max
of inertia of the cross section. From the formula given,
M max

200 N/mm2
8 104 mm4 16 105 Nmm = 1.6 kNm .
10 mm

E
I , where I is the moment
R

bd 3 120 203

. Hence
