with lime-based render which were then followed by

greyish Portland cement based skim coat in later years. Though this is not
desirable as the cement rich skim coat is very hard and brittle
and may cause failure of the underlying softer lime based render.
However since, the
cement based skim coat is very thin, typically less than about 1-2mm, it
should not be detrimental to the lime based render. It can be left intact as
its removal may cause further damage to the lime render given the good
adhesion. Should the cement skim coat be found to be excessively thick
and the integrity of the lime render be compromised, the skim coat should
be removed.

The Remmers KSE 300 solvent free stone strengthener will be applied
to the exposed substrate, be it cement skim coat or lime render.
However, its main purpose will be to strengthen the lime base render.

Mape Antique FC Ultra-fne a lime base dehumidifying skimming mortar

is suitable to be used for re-profling the damaged surface of the
balustrades. As specifed in the technical data a layer not more than
1mm thick to be applied for each coat. The skim coat to be
applied strictly in accordance to the manufactures
recommendation.

To re-profle damaged balustrades using skim coat, a mould of an

existing balustrade will need to be prepared and submitted for approval of
the Architect prior to the trial mock up.
