WhyReachOutToAnOrganization?
Collaboratingandorgainingsupportfromanorganizationwhosemissionis
already
to
positivelyimpactSanDiegoCountyintermslivinghealthyisextremelyimportant.Reaching
outtoanorganizationwhoisalreadywellestablishedandsharesthiscommongoalwillhelp
legitimizetheeffortsoutlinedinthisplanandwillsignificantlyaffecthowthisprojectis
perceivedbythepublic.

TheMainObjectiveAndLookingToReachOut
ThemainobjectiveofthiscommunityorientedprojectistoteachSanDiegoCounty
studentsabouttheendlessbenefitsofmakinghealthyeatingchoices,andexercisingonadaily
basis.Inadditiontothisdefiniteplan,changingschoollunchesthroughtheSanMarcosUnified
SchoolDistrictisanothernecessaryactiontobetakeniftimepermits.Asimportantaschanging
schoollunchesinthedistricttrulyis,thisisaverydifficulttasktoaccomplishandwillonlybe
doneifourworkinschoolsandcommunitiesacrossSanDiegoCountyissuccessful.This
longtermproject
couldverywellincorporateaFunRun,healthycookinglessons,anda
communitypicnictofurtherinvolvetheschoolsandcommunitiesourprojectwillimpact.

Alongsidetheseplans,reachingouttoorganizationsinSanDiegowhospecializeinhealthy
living(eatinghealthyandexercisingdaily)
must
happeninordertogainthefinancialsupport
andgeneralawarenessneededtohosttheseevents.Becauseourentireclassisrelatively
inexperiencedwithfundraisingandincreasingawarenessforaseriouscause,reachingoutto
variousorganizationsisanexceptionalwaytoreceivefirsthandinsightandtips.

LiveWellSanDiego
,
HealthyWorks,
and
ActionForHealthyKids
havealready
respondedtoourmissionwithquicknessandefficiency.
LiveWellSanDiego
isactively
empoweringresidentstotakepositiveactionsfortheirownhealth,safetyandwellbeing
and
evenhasaBMIToolkit(createdbytheChulaVistaElementarySchoolDistrict)asawayfor
SanDiegocitizenstofindandadapttohealthyeatinghabits.
LiveWellSanDiego
hasdirected
theprojecttotheNorthCounty
LiveWellSanDiego
CommunityLeadershipteam,whocan
assistinpreventingthisprobleminamorepersonalizedwayconsideringthattheyarebasedin
theNorthCountyarea.
HealthyWorks
,locatedinSanDiego,alsosupports(accordingtotheir
website)healthyeatingandactivelivinginadditiontotobaccofreeliving,andhealthy
communities.Finally,
ActionForHealthyKids
missionisto
mobilizeschoolprofessionals,
familiesandcommunitiestotakeactionsthatleadtohealthyeating,physicalactivityand
healthierschoolswherekidsthrive.
TheStateCoordinatorofCaliforniafor
ActionFor
HealthyKids
,KatiaAhmed,hasalreadyconnectedwiththeclassaboutfullysupportingthe
projectandpotentiallyfeaturingitintheorganizationsmonthlynewsletter.

WhatWePlanToAccomplishInTheFuture
Althoughthesearetheonlyorganizationsthathavebeenreachedouttoatthispointin
time,the
SanDiegoCountyChildhoodObesityInitiative
andthe
CDCCommunityProfile:
CountyofSanDiego
couldalsosoonbenotifiedaboutthisprojectaswellashowtheymightbe
abletoprovideassistance.AnothercontactwillmostlikelybetheChulaVistaElementary
SchoolDistrictwho,withthehelpof
LiveWellSanDiego,
improvedtheirschoolslunchesin
healthiness,taste,andqualityaswellasincreasedphysicalactivitylevelsinalloftheirschools.
From2012to2014,thenowhealthyeducationalenvironmentdiscoveredafivepercentdecrease
inunhealthyweightlevelsamongstudentsandafivepercentincreaseinnormalweightrange.
Duetotheseastonishingresults,theclassisextremelyinterestedinreachingouttothe
Chula
VistaElementarySchoolDistrictinanattempttofurtherunderstandhowtheywereabletoalter
theirownlunches.ChildNutritionServicesfortheSanMarcosUnifiedSchoolDistrictand
possiblythedistrictitselfareexcellentcontactsintermsofpotentiallychangingschoollunches
forthebetterintheSanMarcoscommunity.MarkSchiel,theAssistantSuperintendent
ofthe
SanMarcosUnifiedSchoolDistrict,wouldbeagreatcontactduetothefactthatheis
responsibleforthedistrictsfinancialmattersandhassignificantexperiencewithfoodservices.
Thisistheapproachthatmustbetakentocontactorganizations.
