Song Lyric and Found Poem Handouts
Have students read their books for about 15-20 minutes
while taking attendance.
Hand out sheets afterward while they are reading.
Begin the lecture by asking students why they think they
should bother to learn about poetry. Discuss this
question as a class.
Go through the PowerPoint slides to highlight for
students examples of poetry in their everyday lives
(cards, books, TV, movies, songs).
Watch the music videos for Katy Perrys Roar, Lordes
Royals, Keith Urban and Miranda Lamberts We Were
Us and Eminem and Rihannas The Monster.
Discuss each song as a class one at a time watching the
video before discussing poetic devices within the song as
a class.
Subsequent to this, show students the example of a found
poem using lyrics in the PowerPoint presentation before
having them write their own found poem using one of the
aforementioned songs.
Have students write a short response (about a paragraph)
about their favourite song. Have them write about who
the song is by and why it is their favourite song. Also
have them write a few of the lyrics since it may not be
one that I am familiar with.
Formative: Students will be assessed on whether they put
in a good effort, complete and hand in their found poem.
Have students that have chosen the same song get
together with their lyric sheet and make a found poem as
a group.
Have students complete an additional found poem using
one of the remaining songs.
Depend on the student
Could use songs students like or their favourite songs,
books and movies if students are asked what they are
ahead of time to make the material more applicable to
them.
Update songs/movies depending on when the lesson is
being taught to keep the material relevant.

Found Poetry
A found poem is a poem that is constructed by combining meaningful phrases from the text
you are reading. It gives you an opportunity to share some of your favourite words or phrases
from the work-words that create vivid pictures or express significant ideas. Your poem should
reflect your interpretation of the theme or mood of the work you are examining. For this
activity:
1. Choose one of the four songs looked at by the class.
2. Find lines within the song that are particularly interesting or that you just really like.
3. Jot down the words and images that are strongest for you-words that are emotionally
charged, or the most essential to the feeling of the song. Generate a long list.
4. Begin to play with the words and images you have chosen, rearranging them until you
find an order that appeals to you.
Ideas to consider in making your poem:
Place the words that you think are most important at the ends of the lines.
Set off powerful single words on lines by themselves.
Use a repetitive refrain.
Create a pattern: For example, start all of your lines with prepositions, using ing words,
or onomatopoetic words.
Allow yourself to add, subtract, or change words to fit your poem.
Remember to:
Make sure that your poem is at least six lines.
Give your poem a TITLE (it may or may not be different from the song title). Be sure to
give credit to the artist and the song (underlined) that inspired your poem.
Pass in your poem when it is finished. Be sure to include your NAME and ROUGH
work as well as a NEAT, handwritten GOOD copy.
BE CREATIVE!!!
Rearview crosses
Railroad ties
Oh, Hail Marys
Friday nights
Heartbeat baby
Low-beam lights
God, I miss when you were mine
[Chorus:]
Back when that song was a song
I could sing along without thinkin bout you every time it came on
Every beat, every line, every word, every time
When a road was a road
I could roll on through without wishin that empty seat was you
Money was gas, dreams were dust
Love was fast and we were us
Shotgun sunset
A cool mint kiss
Backseat promise
Breaking it
Floorboard feeling
County lines
God, I miss when you were mine
[Repeat Chorus]
In a sleepy town, just jumping in
Far too young to know that summers end
We were us, we can't go back
Lorde Royals"
[Verse 1]
I've never seen a diamond in the flesh
I cut my teeth on wedding rings in the movies
And I'm not proud of my address,
In a torn-up town, no postcode envy
But every song's like gold teeth, grey goose,1 trippin' in the bathroom
Blood stains, ball gowns, trashin' the hotel room,
We don't care, we're driving Cadillacs in our dreams.
But everybody's like Cristal,2 Maybach,3 diamonds on your timepiece.
Jet planes, islands, tigers on a gold leash.
We don't care, we aren't caught up in your love affair.
And we'll never be royals (royals).
It don't run in our blood,
That kind of luxe just ain't for us.
We crave a different kind of buzz.
Let me be your ruler (ruler),
You can call me queen Bee
And baby I'll rule, I'll rule, I'll rule, I'll rule.
Let me live that fantasy.
[Verse 2]
My friends and Iwe've cracked the code.
1 Grey Goose Vodka
2 Cristal is a form of sparkling wine produced by Louis Roederer
3 Maybach luxury automobiles
[Chorus - Rihanna]
I'm friends with the monster
That's under my bed
Get along with the voices inside of my head
You're trying to save me
Stop holding your breath
And you think I'm crazy
Yeah, you think I'm crazy (crazy)
[Eminem - Verse 1]
I wanted the fame, but not the cover of Newsweek
Oh well, guess beggers can't be choosey
Wanted to receive attention for my music
Wanted to be left alone, public excuse me
Been wanting my cake, I need it too
Wanting it both ways
Fame may be a balloon cause my ego inflated
When I blew seep it was confusing
Cause all I wanted to do is be the Bruce Lee4 of loose leaf
Abused ink, used it as a tool when I blew steam
Hit the lottery (oh wee)
With what I gave up to get was bittersweet
It was like winning a huge meet
Ironic 'cause I think I'm getting so huge I need a shrink
I'm beginning to lose sleep: one sheep, two sheep
