Describing motion: Determination of the acceleration due to gravity

Introduction
Describing motion of an object under the influence of gravity can be simplified when the
influence of air resistance is minimized. An object undergoing this type of motion, its position is
expressed as

1
y (t )= y 0+ v 0 t g t 2
2
For an initial condition given by

y 0=0 ; v 0=0 at t = 0, then its position reduces to

1 2
y ( t )= g t
2
If the point of release of this object is defined, then the acceleration due to gravity can be
determined by

g=

2y
2
t

The objective of this activity is to determine the acceleration due to gravity using the relation of
free falling objects.
