In May, students continued to work on reading and writing activities
related to their novel study on Wonder. We had oral discussions reCourses:
lated to the books themes, and read over sample answers in the
class. In addition, students completed a reading comprehension as- Language

Social Studies:
For Social Studies we wrapped up our Explorers and First Contact unit with a
test and the culminating Menu Board project. We will begin learning about New
France and current First Nations affairs for the month of June, Insha Allah.

Mathematics:
In math, students completed Unit 6 Measurement. In this unit, students learned about
time, volume, mass, and temperature. We also
used the I-Pad to play games which the students
enjoyed. In June, we will be learning Grade 6
material, so that students have a taste of what
they will be learning next year, Insha Allah.

Boys Gym and Health:


We have been continuing with Kickball for the
warm month of May, mainly playing outdoors
with the beautiful weather. The boys have
been competing against one another (5As and
5Bs). We will be concluding the Kickball unit
with a tournament inshaAllah.
In health, we learned about Substance Use and
Abuse. Students learned why they should
avoid alcohol, as well as refusal strategies.

Girls Gym and Health:


In Gym, the girls have continued
playing basketball. They have been
developing their skills for passing,
dribbling, and shooting the basketball. The girls also played kickball.

Science:

Islamic Studies:

In Science, we played a Jeopardy game in which we


reviewed concepts pertaining to Energy. After
completing our Unit test, we began our unit on Forces and Structures, which will carry into June.

Students completed their pamphlets


and articles pertaining to fasting and
zakah. After this, we started our unit
on the Khulafa Rashidun, and are learning about the Khalifa. We will have a
couple of open-book assessments in
June on these lessons.

Special Events!
Masha Allah, May was a fun-filled month! We had many snacks and treats, including, a hot dog lunch, monthly pizza lunch, as well as Nusaybahs and Aliyahs pizza
lunches for the class. We also had our field trip to the Trec Energy Festival
which involved students in several exciting hands-on activities. We also had the
Jump Rope for Heart Kick off Assembly, in which students wore red. The Gr. 5
baseball and dodgeball tournaments were a lot of fun! IFS Carnival was a blast,
despite the weather!
Finally, the Social Studies Bazaar was a huge success! In the student-led event,
various games and activities were organized. Money raised was given to Syrian
Refugees and spent on the final trip to Ezone. Our Ezone trip was also a lot fun!
