Press Release
May 18, 2010

On Tuesday, May 18, 2010 a Dothan Police Officer conducted a traffic

stop of a vehicle on US 84 West for a traffic violation. During the traffic
stop the Officer discovered a weapon, narcotics and suspicious device in
the vehicle. The driver of the vehicle was taken into custody. In response
to the suspicious device, the Dothan Police Bomb Squad was activated.
The Dothan Police Department rerouted west bound traffic on West Main
Street allowing for a margin of safety to passing motorists. After
assessing the situation and allowing time for additional assets from
various agencies the team stopped all traffic on West Main Street for
approximately ten minutes. It was during this time that the team rendered
the device safe. The remnants of the device have been collected as
evidence in this ongoing investigation. At this time a search warrant is
being served at a residence in Houston County in connection with the
traffic stop. Investigators say the City of Dothan will bring charges
against the suspect, State and Federal charges may be pending at the
conclusion of the case. While the investigation is ongoing, the identity of
the suspect is not being released, an update will be provided at a later
time.

The Dothan Police Department would like to thank the Dothan Fire
Department, Houston County Sheriffs Office, Emergency Management
Agency, State Fire Marshal, State Department of Transportation, Alabama
State Troopers, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Federal Prosecutors
Office and The Salvation Army for their assistance with this case.
