ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES FOR UNIT 2 TEACHERS NOTES

Activity 2.1

Giving opinions. (N.B. there are also several examples of using the passive.)
Reading and Speaking
20 minutes
Photocopy Worksheet 2a for each student. Fold each copy twice as shown below.

Procedure

Group your students into pairs or small groups to encourage discussion.


Hand out a copy of Worksheet 2a, folded, to each student.
Ask the students to consider the five named inventions and discuss in what order they think they came about.
After a few minutes, ask each group to give its opinion (write these up on the board).
Now ask your students to unfold and read the second section of Worksheet 2a the five short passages of
information.
Next, ask each group to (a) match each passage of information to one of the five inventions and (b) work out the
order in which the inventions occurred.
After a few minutes discussion, ask the students to unfold the final part of Worksheet 2a and fill in the timeline.
Discuss any differences between the original predictions and the facts.

Activity 2.2 is a continuation of the previous activity.

Procedure

Explain that you want the students to give their opinions.


Give them a few minutes to think about the four questions on Worksheet 2b.
Discuss. (This can be done in small groups or as a class.)
The students could write a paragaph about their opinions as homework.

If the students work in groups, walk around and monitor and then ask a few students to report back on their
group discussions.
