Activity 3.3

Time (approx):
Preparation:

Language used in emails and telephone text messages.

Writing
15+ minutes
Photocopy Worksheet 3 for each pair of students.

In class, this activity follows on from 3.1 and 3.2 above. Students could also tackle the first part individually as a
homework exercise. If so, photocopy the worksheet for each student.

Procedure

Ask your students to work in their pairs to write a text message, in SMS format, to another pair of students.
Determine which pairs will write to one another, so that each one will receive a message.
When the messages are complete, tell your students to deliver them to the pairs they were intended for.
Now ask your students to try to decipher the message they have received.
Depending on the time available, allow the text conversations to continue by encouraging students to reply with
another message.
