Kim Jong-un

The Macbeth of Today

Early Life
Much of Kim Jong-uns early life is still unknown to the
Western world. He is believed to be born in North
Korea, in late 1983 or early 1984. His mother Ko
Young-hee was an opera singer, who had two other
children before him. It is thought that Kim Jong-un was
educated in Switzerland before attending the Kim
Il-sung Military University in the capital of Pyongyang in
the mid-2000s. It has also been reported that his father, Kim Jong-il, indeed took a liking to Kim Jong-un,
noting that he saw a temperament similar to himself in his youth (Kim Jong-un Biography).

Rise to Power
He was never thought of as the one to inherit his fathers position as Supreme Leader. It was expected
that either his half-brother Kim Jong-nam or older full brother Kim Jong-chol would be the two
candidates for the position. However Kim Jong-nam's deportation from Japan in May 2001 and Kim
Jong-chol's apparent "unmanliness" saw his chances increase. Kim Jong Il began to prepare Kim
Jong-un for the role in 2010, and upon his father's death in December 2011, Kim Jong-un assumed
power. It is believed that he was in his late 20s at the time (Profile: Kim Jong-un, North Korea's

His Actions as Leader

Kim Jong-un has created a strong feeling of fear amongst the North Korean population. Starvation,
forced labour, executions, torture, rape, and forced abortions are all tools reported to be used by the
regime on those considered to have committed a political crime. Citizens are even denied access to
food because they consider it a means of control over the population to ensure that those deemed
expendable are prioritized. Living conditions are also affected by the laws set in place by the country.
In an effort to keep the the capital pure, anyone subject to a political wrong, is systematically
banished from the city along with any of their family (Life in North Korea: executions, starvation and
fear).
