The Great Trek January 1967. When the first Selkirk College students walked from their temporary, makeshift classes at
Celgar to the new campus.

Selkirk College 50th Anniversary

Fifty years ago, Selkirk College embarked on its mission to serve the communities of the West KootenayBoundary region through inspiring lifelong learning and
transforming lives through education. In September, the
college is inviting all those who have been impacted over
five decades to return home for a golden celebration.
As part of Selkirk Colleges yearlong 50th Anniversary Celebration, the Homecoming Weekend is set for
September 16 to 18 and will be three days of community building to recognize how far post secondary in the
region has come and the exciting places its headed in the
next 50 years.
The Homecoming Weekend is an opportunity to bring
the community together in a celebration of post secondary learning, says Maggie Keczan, Selkirk College
marketing manager. We have a number of great events
planned that will bring together alumni, retirees, current
staff and students, future students and all the residents of
our region. There is something for everyone and we cant
wait to bring everybody together.
The events will take place at the Castlegar Campus starting with the Board of Governors and Presidents Reception on Friday afternoon. The weekend celebration will
continue on Saturday morning where everyone is invited
to a free community pancake breakfast that will include
fun activities for the entire family.
Thousands of lives have been impacted and changed by
Selkirk College over the years, says Keczan. We want all
those people to come out and celebrate the achievement
of 50 years together. The pancake breakfast, activities and
displays we have planned will showcase what Selkirk College has meant to people, what it still means and what we
can continue to accomplish together.
The breakfast and activities will wrap-up at 11 am to
make way for the Commemorative Celebration and Recognition of The Great Trek. When Selkirk College began
PAGE 18

in September, 1966, the 458 charter students took classes

in the bunkhouses at the Celgar pulp mill. In January,
1967, the Castlegar Campus was completed and students
marched from the site to the new building. The Great
Trek is a vital part of Selkirk Colleges history and really
highlights the spirit for post secondary education that has
continued to flourish until this day, says Keczan. We
will recognize this moment in our history and hear from
todays leaders about where Selkirk College is going in the
next half century.
The Through the Decades evening gala takes place on
Saturday night at the Castlegar Campus and will feature music and food that pays homage to each of the five
decades Selkirk College has passed through. Mingle from
room to room, socializing as you enjoy the tasty fare and
relish in the camaraderie established over half a century.
Tickets for the gala are $100 and are selling fast.
Sunday will feature the Selkirk College Saints golf tournament, an annual fundraiser for the hockey team that is
open to anyone interested in a great day at the Castlegar
Golf Course. Tickets for the gala can be purchased online
and more details on the golf tournament can be found at
www.selkirk.ca.
The weekend will also feature a number of program and
class reunions organized by individual alumni groups.
Now is the time for interested groups to reach out to their
former classmates and Selkirk College who encourages
engagement. We want alumni to use this weekend as an
opportunity to get together to reminisce about their time
spent at Selkirk College, says Keczan. We will provide
support for all reunions on the weekend and throughout the year with material to help make these individual
events a success.
You can find out more information about the Selkirk College Homecoming Weekend at www.selkirk.ca/

Recreation Infrastructure
Grants Announced

Whether you enjoy lawn bowling or golf, take to the

backcountry on foot, skis or bike, or prefer to hit a tennis
ball or pickle ball, dozens of expansions, improvements
and new developments to the spaces that keep you moving are on their way. With the Columbia Basin Trusts
Recreation Infrastructure Grants, 42 projects around the
region are getting over $3.5 million in support.
The Trust announced the $9 million, three year program in January 2016. It provides financial support to
help communities and groups build new recreation infrastructure or upgrade existing recreation infrastructure.
Were pleased to provide grants to such a wide range
of projects that will help people stay fit and enjoy where

we live, said Neil Muth, Columbia Basin Trust president

and chief executive officer. Supporting residents to lead
active, healthy lifestyles is one of our strategic priorities
and developing the amenities that help them do so is an
important step.
One of the recipients is the Valhalla Hills Nordic Ski
Club. It will construct three kilometres of cross-country
ski trails for both classic and skate skiing techniques.
These will be located halfway between New Denver and
Nakusp at Summit Lake. For many years weve run programs on private land and the Rail Trail in Hills, but we
found we needed to offer more challenging terrain and be
more easily accessible, said Tim Sander, club secretary.
Weve selected a location with good public access, normally deep snow, diverse terrain and outstanding scenery.
The expanded network will provide an opportunity for all

Sandy Stevenson December 13, 1948 - May 31, 2016

ndrew (Sandy) Brett Stevenson,

the first child of Dr. Mack
(Edward)
Stevenson
and
Caroline (Belton), was born in Vancouver
and passed away at age 67 in great peace,
while held by his loving family.
Sandy and his sister Muff (Nancy Carol)
enjoyed a magical early childhood.
The Stevensons moved to Vernon in
the fifties to open a family medicine
practice and start a new life on the
shores of Kalamalka Lake.

Sandy enjoyed the outdoors with

passion, got up to lots of mischief in the
Coldstream Valley and by high school
was a devilishly handsome quarterback,
hot skier, hockey star and guitar-playing
scholar-philosopher. Ever a prankster,
his wild sense of humour was legendary
throughout his life. After a stint at
Reed College in Portland in chemical
engineering, Sandy hitchhiked around
Canada and across Europe, hopped a
few freight trains and gained tons of life
experience in the work force, holding
jobs in the Yukon, Golden, Vernon and
Trail. He then found himself back at
University of Victoria (UVIC) pursuing
his teachers certificate in education.
Sandy met Pamela in the Art
Department of UVIC, while welding a
giant frog with a heart of gold; they fell
in love and he convinced her to move
with him to a one-room cabin in a
Vernon orchard to pursue their careers
together as working artists. Sandy
and Pam were married at Coldstream
Park, Vernon, on August 16, 1975,
surrounded by many friends and family.
After camping around southern BC, the
Slocan Valley captured their hearts and
they bought their homestead in the fall
of 1976. Tara Moani was born at home
in July 1978 and Bryn arrived in March,

1983. Sandy provided wonderful

opportunities for the family to have
myriad backcountry experiences, craft
fair road trips, summer camping and
fishing on Slocan Lake, manifesting all
the blessings of a perfect Kootenay life.
Sandy and Pamela exhibited and sold
metal sculpture, jewellery, and pottery,
under the banner of Amazing Grace
across Western Canada for 25 years.
The Bhakti Brothers Road Hockey
League was formed by Sandy in the
mid-80s and Shakers Lodge was built
in Airy basin during Thanksgiving of
1987. Sandy was the main hut-keeper
for thirty years and guided many friends
and families through the mountains
on countless hiking and backcountry
skiing expeditions.
In 1992, Sandy attended Selkirk College
to gain his teaching qualifications,
completed the WKTEP program and
landed, what to him was a dream job,
at Stanley Humphries Senior Secondary
(SHSS) teaching Art. He absolutely
loved his role as a creative mentor to
young people, and was an inspiration for
seventeen years of high-school graduates.
Sandy set a high bar for art and many,
many students rose to it, developing
both their capacity as young artists
and a much stronger sense of self at
the same time. Accomplished paintings
and murals covered the walls of SHSS
school for years, a living evidence of the
quality of art and enthusiasm coming
out of his classroom.
After retiring in June 2010, Sandy
focused on his passion for watercolour
painting and photography, and he
continued to enjoy all his athletic
interests in the great outdoors. He
continued his life-long meditation and
yoga practice with Self-Realization

Fellowship (SRF), attending many

retreats in Vancouver, California,
Hawaii, India and Bali. Sandy was a
dedicated founder and service reader
of the SRF Winlaw meditation circle for
40 years.
In June 2015, Sandy became OmDad
to his granddaughter Kira Leilani. He
will be cherished as a loving husband,
father, brother, loyal friend and devoted
family man.
Sandy is survived by his wife Pamela
of Winlaw, children Tara Alexander
(Jamie) of Port Coquitlam and Bryn
of Nelson, granddaughter Kira Leilani
Alexander, sister Muff Klein (Jim) of
Kelowna, nephew Torey (Carol) of
Tsawwassen and the Dale cousins of
BC: Chris (Jody), Jeffy (Terry), Stu
(DeMaris), Stephen (Megan), and
Bruce, as well as his brother in-law Erik
Nagley (Denise) of Hawaii.
A celebration of Sandys life will begin
at 4:00 pm on July 31st at the Vallican
Whole Community Centre, with a
potluck feast and exhibition of Sandys
art. Come to share stories, dance
together and express our love for him.
You have to find true peace and
happiness within yourself your outer
experiences should be only fun.

Students Help Conserve

The Western Painted Turtle

Students from Salmo Elementary have been working

to design and install six interpretive panels to engage the community
on the importance of conserving
the Western Painted Turtle population at Champion Lakes Provincial
Park near Fruitvale. The project has
been a true community collaboration, bringing together Wildsights
EcoStewards Program, Artstarts Artists in the Classroom, RAP Park
Contracting and the Salmo School,
with the support of the Columbia
Basin Trust.
Anne and Rick Pigeon, the Park
facility operators at Champion Lakes
noticed that these special turtles
were being harassed and their habitat trampled. They wanted to do
something about it and received a
grant to develop interpretive signs to
educate park visitors.
This is where the grade two to six multi-age class at
Salmo Elementary stepped in. The students helped to
illustrate the signs using the expertise of local artists and
knowledge gained about the turtles through interactive
activities, costumes, puppets, role-playing and discussion. With the guidance of artist Heather Dean, they have
produced some amazing paintings of the Western Painted

Turtle, its food sources and predators. Nichola Lytle, of

Pink Dog Designs, introduced the students to the elements of designing interpretive signs and helped them
envision what the final signs will look like. She is currently
working on designing the signs with
the beautiful artwork and design
input generated by the students.
Later this month, the students will
take a field trip to Champion Lakes
where they will be immersed in the
turtles home, studying the ecosystem
relationships in the park. This has
been an amazing example of community partnerships and a chance for
the students to be active participants
in a project that will have real life
meaning and impact I see that they
already feel empowered to be helping, said local Wildsight educator,
Genna Lazier. My hope is that these
students will become stewards of the
turtles in their backyard park for
years to come. The class has amazed
me with their interest in the project
and their artistic development this
a special group of kids!
There will be an art opening and celebration in June
where student artwork, the signs and a video montage of
photos from the project will be on display. The signs will
be installed in the park in July.

Grant Your Children

The Best Possible Future

Kootenay Savings encourages parents to take advantage

of a key program that can help the financial and educational well-being of their young children the BC Training
and Education Savings Grant (BCTESG).
The $1,200 government grant was launched last August
and Kootenay Savings was one of the first financial institutions to provide access to the grants. Since September, the
families of more than 3,200 children have started BCTESG
accounts at BC credit unions to take advantage of the program, putting $3.8 million into education accounts for
their children.
This year 80,000 children across the province are, or will
become, eligible to receive the $1,200 grant from the province. It is a one-time provincial incentive available to children when they turn six years old and must be used for post
secondary education or training. The grant is available to
children born after 2006, once they turn six years old. You
may apply any time before their ninth birthday.
The cost of pursuing post secondary education is high
and the price of a four year university degree continues to
rise year after year, explains Kootenay Savings VP: Sales
and Member Experience, Nancy Crockett. With smart
planning and advice, plus a boost from the available government grants and matching funds that make growing
RESP savings even easier, there has never been a better time
for parents to start saving for their childrens future.
Since the BCTESG is a new program, if a child had their
sixth birthday in 2013, 2014 or 2015, families can get an
extension until August 14, 2018 or the day before their
ninth birthday, whichever is later, to get the grant.
Parents can apply for the grant at any Kootenay Savings
branch. While parents do not need to contribute to a Registered Education Savings Plan to receive this grant, they
must open one before the child turns nine.
In order to enroll, both the child and a parent must be
residents of BC and have valid social insurance numbers.
If approved, the $1,200 grant will be deposited directly into
an RESP once the application has been processed by the
Employment and Social Development Canada. The money
will arrive within six to eight week.
Once the child is enrolled in full-time or part-time studies at a qualifying post secondary educational program, the
BC Training and Education Savings Grant can be withdrawn from the RESP.

Parents interested in discussing options available to

them when setting up an RESP and applying for grants are
encouraged to speak with a financial expert to help determine the best contribution methods and investing strategies. More information on RESPs, including the variety of
options available through Kootenay Savings, can be found
online at www.kscu.com/Personal/Investing/RESPs or by
visiting any branch of Kootenay Savings.

Art And Garden Tour Blooms Again!

After 20 years of dedication to the Art and Garden Tour,

the Slocan Valley Arts Council is passing the pruning
shears to the West Kootenay Permaculture Co-op Association. With roots firmly in place, the event continues to
flourish, taking place Sunday, June 26 from 10 am to 4 pm.
This year there are six exciting gardens from Slocan
Park to Slocan, each one different yet inspiring and featuring local artists. There will be an outdoor concert of the
Slocan Valley Community Band at 2 pm at Rabias. Take
in the gardens, the art or just enjoy a day in the beautiful
Slocan Valley.

your

would
benefit from
having a website?

& reviews...
Your website can answer all the questions that youd
rather not pay someone to answer ~ and face it, these
days customers dont want to talk to you until they
are ready. They want to find those answers quickly
and easily for themselves, online, while they ponder
the benefits of the service or merchandise they wish
to purchase.

Art & Garden

Tour

contd from pg 41
Several great businesses
have joined in helping to
make the event a success,
please support them on
your travels- you will find
them on our map, available
online at www.kootenayfood.com/ and prior to the
tour at local businesses and
the gardens.
Organizers Shauna Fidler
and Sharon Butler say they
are indebted to the Arts
Councils
commitment
over the years, especially
Laura Tiberti and grateful
for the opportunity to continue the event. They hope
that this new direction is
a long lasting and fruitful
way for the Slocan Valley
Art and Garden Tour to
continue in a viable fashion
and to inspire people with
the beauty of art and nature
that is so abundant in our
community.

Public Outcry Wins Reprieve

For Threatened Toads

Proposed logging above Summit Lake

Provincial Park, that could have crushed
hundreds of blue listed toads while
destroying their habitat, has been stopped
until winter. The decision comes as the result of ongoing
complaints by local residents, environmental groups and the
Okanagan First Nation. The decision was apparently made
by the logging company the Nakusp and Area Community Forest (NACFOR) but was communicated to the Valhalla Wilderness Society (VWS) by the Ministry of Forests,
Lands and Natural Resource Operations (MFLNRO).
Earlier this year, in response to the protests of numerous
local residents, NACFOR and the government told the public that the logging would use Best Management Practices to
minimize damage to toads and their habitat. This included
logging only in winter, when the toads would be hibernating. However, NACFOR began grading the road in May and
brought in a feller buncher when hundreds, if not thousands,
of yearling toads were dispersing up the slope from Summit
Lake to their habitat in the forest. Logging at this time would
not have been Best Management Practices, it would have been
Worst Possible Management Practices, says Craig Pettitt, a
director of the Valhalla Wilderness Society.
VWS immediately notified MFLNRO and the Conservation Officer Service that masses of toads were in the area. In
a complaint to the Forest Practices Board, VWS requested an
investigation into whether knowingly killing the toads would
violate BC wildlife laws. Wilderness Committee (WC), VWS
and public donors co-sponsored a local videographer to provide video evidence, which was released to the media.
Jim Guido, the Resource Manager for the Selkirk District inspected the area with NACFOR on May 31 and
found numerous toads. They then attended a meeting of
MFLNRO managers and operations staff to discuss the
Best Management Practices and the wildlife laws. On June
1 NACFOR informed the Ministry that it would cancel the
summer harvest and likely return to log this winter. The
Ministry informed VWS in an email, also stating that they
found no violation of BC wildlife laws, but that question
would be decided by the Conservation Officer Service and
the Forest Practices Board.
Best Management Practices will not save the toads, says
VWS director Craig Pettitt.Logging in winter may reduce
the damage on the ground, but hibernating toads will still be
killed and with the forest overstory removed by clearcutting,
these areas will be exposed to the sun and dry out in summer, making them uninhabitable for the toads.
The government already has a Section 16 reserve on the
books to significantly expand the boundary of Summit Lake
Provincial Park, says VWS director and professional wildlife
biologist Wayne McCrory. It would be a very easy thing for the
government to adjust the proposed park addition to include the
core terrestrial habitat where Summit Lake toads spend 95% of
their lifetimes. This would require an addition to the reserve
of only about 670 hectares to protect this species at risk. The
government bends over backwards to revise park boundaries
for industry such as oil and gas pipelines, but for the lack of
a 670-hectare park expansion, when winter comes these toads
may yet have significant additional mortalities heaped on them
from logging. That would be a travesty.
