Lesson Teaching Reflective Summary

Teacher Candidate for Science Endorsement: Sean Splawski

Instructor: Dawn, Wes, and Matt
School: Mableton Grade: K-5 STEM Lab Instructor
Lesson Topic: Weather Bee Bots learning the Weather
Write a brief summary or blog of your experiences teaching this lesson,
addressing the following questions:

What went well? What did not go well? (Cite specific examples)
I began the lesson by showing a brief introduction to Bee Bots by
showing a video that I made for Kindergartners. I then reinforced
how to use the Bee Bot by modeling on the projector. Then I told
the students they would be using their Bee Bots to program them
to different types of weather. To play they need to draw a picture
out of the black and white picture bag. Then they program their
Bee Bot to get to the matching colored picture of that type of
weather. Most students were able to successfully program their
robot to the correct pictures. Some students had difficulty
making their robot turn in the correct direction. Students were
given the option to only drive straight if they struggled.

How well were the lessons student performance objectives

attained?
This was a great review of types of weather and weather
instruments. Students were able to identify the types of weather
and instruments as they programed their Bee Bots.

Did classroom activity center on science understanding, inquiry,

and sense-making by all students?
This lesson required inquiry to program their Bee Bot and sensemaking by using what they learned over the past 4 lessons to
identify types of weather and instruments.

Did your scientific content knowledge enable you to support

students construction of knowledge and understanding of
important scientific concepts and processes?

My ability to explain how to use a Bee Bot was essential for this
lesson. The students were previously taught types of weather
and instruments from other lessons. That knowledge helped
them program to the correct type of weather.

When you have the opportunity to re-teach this lesson, what will
you do differently (strategies, teaching tools, assessments, etc.)
to improve student learning for all students?
I will have words and pictures in a bag to pick from instead of just
pictures. That will incorporate more literacy into the lesson.
