Wilmington, NC October 5th is World Habitat Day. To celebrate, the Cape Fear branch
of Habitat for Humanity will be celebrating by holding an Interfaith build on Saturday, October
10. A group of people, all affiliated with different religions, will be coming together in unified
compassion to build a house for a local family. Impossible? This organization is breaking barriers
and proving otherwise.
The Interfaith build is a very unique and progressive event, as there are not many events
that seek to unite different religions to come together and accomplish a common goal. Jessica
Loeper, Cape Fear Habitat for Humanitys Director of Outreach, said that this event is, a very
special way to celebrate World Habitat. We are always reaching out to different religious groups
to welcome them to come. It seems the organization efforts have been successful, as last years
Interfaith Build had members from nine different religions groups and faiths.
Each branch of the national organization chooses a way to celebrate World Habitat Day.
The Cape Fear branch proves year that it is possible to bring people of various religions together
to serve the community for the greater good. Currently, Cape Fear Habitat has three religious
groups signed up, including representation from the Roman Catholic, Islamic, and Protestant
faiths. Habitat remains open to even more religious representatives participating in the event. The
event will begin at 8am, with prayers and scripture readings by a representative for each religion
that is present. After this, the building of the home will begin. Overhead costs for this event are
all covered from the proceeds of the Habitat for Humanity Restores. The Habitat Restores are
thrift shops where people in the community can donate their used items and clothing, which are
then sold to others at a discounted price.
The house to be built will benefit a local family in New Hanover County. Habitat for
Humanity is a nationally known organization, recognized for its charitable work within
communities throughout the country. Established in 1987, the Cape Fear branch of Habitat has
been providing quality housing for families in need within this community. Over the years, more
than 160 families in need have been helped through the charity of Cape Fear Habitat for
Humanity.
The purpose of an interfaith build is to acknowledge the differences within a community,
but to also celebrate these differences and prove that a charitable goal is reason enough to join
together. The 10th of October will be a day to remember for Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity,
and a day to remember for the family receiving a new home.
