Fasting and Prayer
Fasting and Prayer
Prayer
Fasting is the most powerful spiritual discipline of all the Christian disciplines.
Through fasting and prayer, the Holy Spirit can transform your life.
Fasting and prayer can also work on a much grander scale. According to Scripture,
personal experience and observation, I am convinced that when God's people fast with
a proper Biblical motive-seeking God's face not His hand-with a broken, repentant, and
contrite spirit, God will hear from heaven and heal our lives, our churches, our
communities, our nation and world. Fasting and prayer can bring about revival - a
change in the direction of our nation, the nations of earth and the fulfillment of the
Great Commission.
The awesome power can be released through you as you fast through the enabling of
the Holy Spirit.
Fasting is one of the most neglected spiritual admonitions. In fact, it has been ignored
for so long that it is difficult to find information on the "how-to's" of this life-changing
experience. When I first undertook an extended fast, I had a difficult time finding
information on the nature of a Biblical fast, how to start, what to expect physically and
spiritually, and how to terminate a fast.
These pages are designed to answer your practical questions about fasting and ease any
concerns you might have. In this series, you will learn:
I want to be of help to you so I will be speaking to you from these pages at various
points in the study. I have completed five 40-day fasts. I want to share with you what I
have learned and what has helped me. Whether you hold a 1-day fast or an extended
40-day fast, I pray that our Lord's most wonderful love and blessings will be poured
out on you as you take this exciting step of faith.
Fasting was an expected discipline in both the Old and New Testament eras.
For example, Moses fasted at least two recorded forty-day periods. Jesus fasted
40 days and reminded His followers to fast, "when you fast," not if you fast.
Fasting and prayer can restore the loss of the "first love" for your Lord and
result in a more intimate relationship with Christ.
Fasting is a biblical way to truly humble yourself in the sight of God (Psalm
35:13; Ezra 8:21). King David said, "I humble myself through fasting."
Fasting enables the Holy Spirit to reveal your true spiritual condition, resulting
in brokenness, repentance, and a transformed life.
The Holy Spirit will quicken the Word of God in your heart and His truth will
become more meaningful to you!
Fasting can transform your prayer life into a richer and more personal
experience.
Fasting can result in a dynamic personal revival in your own life-and make you
a channel of revival to others.
Fasting and prayer are the only disciplines that fulfill the requirements of II
Chronicles 7:14:
"If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek
my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive
their sin and will heal their land."
If you fast, you will find yourself being humbled as I did. You will discover more time
to pray and seek God's face. And as He leads you to recognize and repent of
unconfessed sin, you will experience special blessings from God.
By all means, consult your doctor before you begin your fast. But, be aware that many
doctors have not been trained in this area and so their understanding is limited. Even
so, it would be wise to ask your doctor for a physical exam to make sure you are in
good health. You may have a physical problem that would make fasting unwise or
dangerous. Also, if you are under any type of medication, make sure you talk to your
doctor before changing your regime. Prudence and caution are in order.
When you are assured that you are in good health, you are ready to begin your fast.
Follow the guidelines in the Physical Preparations and Maintaining Nutritional
Balance and Health parts of this website.
In spite of the absolute safety and benefits of fasting, there are certain persons who
should NEVER fast without professional supervision. For example:
So, start slowly. Fast for one meal a day, or one day a week, or one week a month.
Build up your spiritual muscles so that you will be prepared in a period of several
months to fast for an extended 40 day period.
In preparation for this special time with God, I strongly urge you to examine your
heart, and detect any unconfessed sin. Scripture records that God always requires His
people to repent of their sins before He will hear their prayers. King David said:
Come and hear, all of you who reverence the Lord, and I will tell you what he did for
me: For I cried to him for help, with praises ready on my tongue. He would not have
listened if I had not confessed my sins. But he listened! He heard my prayer! He paid
attention to it!
Blessed be God who didn't turn away when I was praying, and didn't refuse me his
kindness and love. (Psalm 66:16-20)
In your prayers, confess not only obvious sins, but less obvious ones as well. The sins
of omission as well as the sins of commission experiences. These may be experiences
leaving your first love for our Lord: worldly-mindedness, self-centeredness, spiritual
indifference, and unwillingness to share your faith in Christ with others, not spending
sufficient time in God's Word and in prayer, a poor relationship with your spouse, your
children, your pastor, or other members of your church.
Another great way to prepare for your fast is to practice what I call "Spiritual
Breathing." The concept is simple, but it has changed my own life and that of millions
of others.
Like physical breathing, Spiritual Breathing is a process of exhaling the impure and
inhaling the pure. If you knowingly sin, breathe spiritually to restore the fullness of
God's Holy Spirit in your life. You exhale by confessing your sins immediately when
you become aware of them, and you inhale by inviting the Holy Spirit to re-take
control of your life. As an act of faith, trust Him to empower you. During the fast,
spiritual breathing-constant reliance on the Holy Spirit-will enable you to resist
temptation, not only to sin but to abandon your fast.
Physical Perparation
Although fasting is primarily a spiritual discipline, it begins in the physical realm. You
should not fast without specific physical preparation.
If you plan on fasting for several days, you will find it helpful to begin by eating
smaller meals before you abstain altogether. Resist the urge to have that "last big feast"
before the fast. Cutting down on your meals a few days before you begin the fast will
signal your mind, stomach, and appetite that less food is acceptable.
Some health professionals suggest eating only raw foods for two days before starting a
fast. I also recommend weaning yourself off caffeine and sugar products to ease your
initial hunger or discomfort at the early stages of your fast.
As you enter this time of heightened spiritual devotion, be aware that Satan will do
everything he can to pull you away from your prayer and Bible reading time. When
you feel the enemy trying to discourage you, immediately go to God in prayer and ask
Him to strengthen your resolve in the face of difficulties and temptations.
The enemy makes you a target because he knows that fasting is the most powerful of
all Christian disciplines and that God may have something very special to show you as
you wait upon Him and seek His face. Satan does not want you to grow in your faith,
and will do anything from making you hungry and grumpy to bringing up trouble in
your family or at work to stop you. Make prayer your shield against such attacks.
My major reason for fasting is for personal revival, revival for our nation, for the
world and for the fulfillment of the Great Commission. But praying for our own needs
and interceding for others are also important reasons to fast and pray. Bring your
personal needs before the Lord, intercede for your loved ones, your friends, your
church, your pastor, your community, your nation, and the world. By your prayers of
humility, as you fast, you will help the Great Commission be fulfilled.
However, do not become so caught up in praying for yourself and others that you
forget about simply reverencing and praising God. True spiritual fasting focuses on
God. Center your total being on Him, your attitudes, your actions, your motives,
desires, and words. This can only take place if God and His Holy Spirit are at the
center of our attention. Confess your sins as the Holy Spirit brings them to your
attention and continue to focus on God and God alone so that your prayers may be
powerful and effective.
A renewed closeness with God and a greater sensitivity to spiritual things are usually
the results of a fast. Do not be disappointed if you do not have a "mountaintop
experience," as some do. Many people who have successfully completed extended
fasts tell of feeling a nearness to God that they have never before known, but others
who have honestly sought His face report no particular outward results at all. For
others, their fast was physically, emotionally, and spiritually grueling, but they knew
they had been called by God to fast, and they completed the fast unto Him as an act of
worship; God honored that commitment.
Your motive in fasting must be to glorify God, not to have an emotional experience,
and not to attain personal happiness. When your motives are right, God will honor
your seeking heart and bless your time with Him in a very special way.
Some nutritionists recommend warm broth, especially if you live in a colder climate.
You may find their recipes helpful:
Gently boil three carrots, two stalks of celery, one turnip, two beats, a half head
of cabbage, a quarter of a bunch of parsley, a quarter of an onion, and a half
clove of garlic
Drain off the broth and drink up to two or three times daily.
You may find the following daily schedule helpful during your fast. I recommend you
print it and keep it handy throughout your fast.
I suggest that you do not drink milk because it is a pure food and therefore a violation
of the fast. Any product containing protein or fat, such as milk or soy-based drinks,
should be avoided. These products will restart the digestion cycle and you will again
feel hunger pangs. Also, for health reasons, stay away from caffeinated beverages such
as coffee, tea, or cola. Because caffeine is a stimulant, it has a more powerful effect on
your nervous system when you abstain from food. This works both against the physical
and spiritual aspects of the fast.
Another key factor in maintaining optimum health during a fast is to limit your
physical activity. Exercise only moderately, and rest as much as your schedule will
permit (this especially applies to extended fasts). Short naps are helpful as well.
Walking a mile or two each day at a moderate pace is acceptable for a person in good
health, and on a juice fast. However, no one on a water fast should exercise without the
supervision of a fasting specialist.
Physical Effect
Hunger Pangs: These are greatest usually during the first three days of the fast. Your
body is adjusting from using the food in your digestive tract (which remains about
three days) to consuming stored fats.
Suggested Relief:
Psyllium Bulk: Help eliminate hunger pangs and also aids in cleansing the body.
Several capsules can be taken throughout the day with plenty of water.
Silymarin tablets may also be helpful, for they are believed to protect and enhance the
cleansing of the liver.
Physical Effect
Coldness, bad breath and heightened body odor, changes in elimination (constipation
or diarrhea), light-headedness, changes in sleeping and dreaming patterns, aches and
pains.
A white-coated tongue at the beginning of a fast may be a part of the body's pattern of
throwing off toxins.
Also expect to go to the bathroom often (you will be drinking lots of water!)
Suggested Relief
After the first two weeks of an extended fast, many of these symptoms subside.
Continuing aches in a certain area of the body usually means elimination of fatty tissue
is going on in that area, which is not harmful. However, any extensive pain should be
examined immediately.
YOU SHOULD STOP FASTING IF YOU ARE EXPERIENCING SEVERE PAIN OR
SWELLING.
Physical Effect
Headaches or stomachaches may be a result of salt, sugar, or caffeine withdrawal.
Suggested Relief
Eliminating those items from your diet prior to fasting is the best way to avoid these
pains.
Physical Effect
Lower back pain may indicate that you are dehydrating
Suggested Relief
Drink more fluids
Physical Effect
Dizziness may be caused by a sudden change in position, such as rising suddenly from
a chair.
Suggested Relief
Stop for a second or two, then recover. Move slowly. (A word of caution: these
conditions may be symptoms of other problems requiring medical attention).
Physical Effect
Minor fasting discomfort
Suggested Relief
Take one teaspoon of psyllium seed powder morning and evening. Mixed in lukewarm
water, it becomes like Jell-O. This powder will hasten the elimination of toxins from
your colon and help to prevent headaches and dizziness for most healthy people.
Alfalfa tablets can help control bad breath and cleanse the system. Two tablets at a
time can be taken several times a day.
Peal four or five medium-sized tomatoes - cut them up, bring them to a boil and
then turn off the heat. When they are cool enough to eat, have as many as you
desire.
Salad of grated carrots and grated cabbage, with half an orange squeezed over
it.
Bowl of steamed greens and pealed tomatoes (spinach, Swiss chard, or mustard
greens). Bring the greens to a boil, then turn off the heat.
You may eat two slices of 100 percent whole-wheat bread, which has been
toasted until it is thoroughly dry-this is called "Melba toast." After it has been
cooled, the toast should be so dry that it would powder if you squeezed it in the
palm of your hand. As I have stated, this first food should be in the morning.
During the day, you may have all the distilled water you wish to drink.
For dinner, you may have a salad of grated carrots, chopped celery and
cabbage, with orange juice for dressing. This will be followed by two cooked
vegetables, one such as spinach, kale, shard, or mustard greens, and one such as
string beans, carrots, steamed celery, okra, or squash. You may have two pieces
of whole-grain "Melba toast." These meals are not to contain oils of any kind.
You may have a dish of any kind of fresh fruit, such as banana, pineapple,
orange, sliced grapefruit, or sliced apples. You may sprinkle this with two
tablespoonfuls of raw wheat germ, and sweeten it with honey, but not over one
tablespoonful
At noon you may have a salad of grated carrots, cabbage, and celery, with one
cooked vegetable and one slice of "Melba toast."
At dinner you may have a salad dish of lettuce, watercress, parsley, and
tomatoes, and two cooked vegetables.
Most experts agree that breaking a fast with vegetables, either steamed or raw, is best.
Your stomach is smaller now, so eat lightly. Stop before you feel full. Stay away from
starches like pastas, potatoes, rice, or bread (except for "Melba toast") for at least a
week. Also avoid meats, dairy products, and any fats or oils for a week or more.
Introduce them very slowly and in small amounts.
Extended fasts are not the only fasts which need to be ended with caution. Even a 3day fast requires reasonable precautions. It is wise to start with a little soup -something thin and nourishing such as vegetable broth made from onion, celery,
potatoes, and carrots -- and fresh fruits such as watermelon and cantaloupe.
In terms of resuming any sort of exercise routine, the advice is the same. Start out
slowly, allowing time for your body to re-adjust to its usual regime.
Jerusalem from exile. God responded by leading them safely to Jerusalem, delivering
them from their enemies and ambushes along the way (Ezra 8:21 31).
Although fasting may show our sincerity, it does not guarantee we will receive what
we desire. Maybe our request is not within Gods will, or we may be asking with the
wrong motives. David fasted for seven days when God struck with illness the child
Bathsheba conceived by David. David repented of his adultery with Bathsheba and the
murder of her husband. He humbled himself, fasted and prayed, but the child still died
(2 Samuel 12:15-18).
Through fasting we can determine the sincerity and correctness of our requests.
FASTING TO KNOW GODS WILL
Seeking Gods will or direction is different from petitioning Him for something we
desire. When the Israelites were in conflict with the tribe of Benjamin, they sought
Gods will through fasting. The entire army fasted until evening, and the men of Israel
asked the Lord, Shall we go out again and fight against our brother Benjamin, or shall
we stop? (Judges 20:26-28).
Acts 13:1-3 implies that church leaders were seeking Gods direction for their ministry
through prayer and fasting. The Holy Spirit responded by saying, Set apart for me
Barnabas and Saul forthe work to which I have called them. In both instances, people
fasted and prayed to determine Gods will.
DEVELOPING DISCIPLINE
An important benefit of fasting is that it promotes self-control by disciplining our
bodies. When we say no to our natural appetite for food, we develop the will-power
and discipline to say no to other fleshy desires (1 Corinthians 9:27).
Other reasons people in the Bible fasted include deliverance (Second Chronicles 20:3),
mourning the loss of a loved one (1 Samuel 31:13), healing the sick (Psalm 35:13),
spiritual strength (Matthew 4:2), and the appointment of elders in the church (Acts
14:23).
Losing weight is NOT the emphasis when fasting for spiritual reasons.
MEN OF GOD CONTINUE TO FAST
Fasting is not limited to believers the Bible mentions. Most of the churchs reformers
-including Martin Luther, John Calvin and John Knox - fasted. Knox fasted and prayed
so much that Queen Mary said she feared his prayers more than all the armies of
Scotland.
John Wesley, the renown English preacher, missionary and founder of Methodism,
fasted twice weekly from sun up until late afternoon. Charles Finney, a revivalist of the
1800s, fasted regularly week and would often go three days without eating when he
felt any diminution of spiritual power at his meetings.
Dr. Bill Bright, founder and president of Campus Crusade for Christ, makes it his
practice to fast and pray. He believes it plays a vital role in what God does through him
and the ministry of Campus Crusade.
Dr. Bright encourages believers to fast, but he also warns of two common pitfalls:
First, we can become legalistic about fasting. It is essential to remember God loves us
and is not displeased with us when we do not fast.
Second, we can take pride in our fasting. We can avoid this problem by focusing on
Gods character and all He has done for us. Most of us do not need to worry about
having the wrong attitude or motive while fasting. A more likely problem is we may
not fast at all.
Fasting is a commitment to seeking the Lord. It is not reserved for the self-righteous,
but it is a privilege from which each of us can benefit.
HOW TO FAST
Most people go without food during a diet or when theyre too busy to eat, but this
isnt biblical fasting. what does fasting mean?
Our sincerity and attitude play important roles in biblical fasting. Before beginning ask
yourself, Am I confident that my desire to fast is Godgiven? what are the spiritual
objectives in this fast? Personal sanctification and consecration? Intercession? Special
burdens? Is there any hidden desire to impress others? when youve honestly
answered these questions youre ready to begin.
Now that youve decided to fast and are properly motivated, you still may not know
how to begin the fast, or how long it should last.
Breaking the fast may require as much discipline as beginning it. During the fast your
stomach contracts and your bodys digestive and elimination systems rest. The longer
you fast, the more time the digestive organs need to reactivate before functioning at
full speed.
If you plan to fast only a day or two at a time, it is best to end the fast with a small
glass of fruit juice as your first meal. Gradually introduce small amounts of easily
digestible foods such as yogurt, soup, fresh fruit, and cooked vegetables.
If your fast lasts longer than a few days, you should continue with juices for a day or
more before gradually introducing more substantial foods like yogurt, soup and fruit.
Be sure you introduce new foods in small quantities, and that it is chewed well. You
should stop eating at the slightest sensation of fullness.
If fasting only a few days at a time, ending the fast should be easier. If you have built
up to and desire to fast longer, you should consult your physician and review a health
book on fasting.
Remember, it is your attitude toward God and your walk with Him that is important,
not how long you fast. God desires for you to love, obey, follow and enjoy Him.
Deliberately abstaining from food is one way to demonstrate your commitment and
sincerity in seeking Him.
Finally, I was convinced. God was calling me to fast, and He would not make such a
call without a specific reason or purpose. With this conviction, I entered my fast with
excitement and expectancy mounting in my heart, praying, "Lord, what do you want
me to do?"
I believe such a long fast was a sovereign call of God because of the magnitude of the
sins of America and of the Church. The Lord impressed that upon my heart, as well as
the urgent need to help accelerate the fulfillment of the Great Commission in this
generation.
As I began my fast, I was not sure I could continue for forty days. But my confidence
was in the Lord to help me. Each day His presence encouraged me to continue. The
longer I fasted, the more I sensed the presence of the Lord. The Holy Spirit refreshed
my soul and spirit, and I experienced the joy of the Lord as seldom before. Biblical
truths leaped at me from the pages of God's Word. My faith soared as I humbled
myself and cried out to God and rejoiced in His presence.
This proved to be the most important forty days of my life. As I waited upon the Lord,
the Holy Spirit gave me the assurance that America and much of the world will, before
the end of the year 2000, experience a great spiritual awakening. This divine visit from
heaven will kindle the greatest spiritual harvest in the history of the Church. But before
God comes in revival power, the Holy Spirit will call millions of God's people to
repent, fast, and pray in the spirit of 2 Chronicles 7:14:
If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek
my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive
their sin and will heal their land.
The scope of this revival depends on how believers in America and the rest of the
world respond to this call. I have spent fifty years studying God's Word and listening to
His voice, and His message could not have been more clear.
This handy reference guide, Seven Basic Steps to Successful Fasting and Prayer, will
help make your time with the Lord more spiritually rewarding. I encourage you to keep
it with you during your fast and refer to it often because it gives easy-to-follow
suggestions on how to begin your fast, what to do while you fast, and how to end your
fast properly.
During my forty-day fast, God impressed me to pray that two million Christians in
North America will fast for forty days by the end of the year 2000, and pray for
national and worldwide revival and for the fulfillment of the Great Commission. I urge
you to prayerfully consider this challenge.
Before you fast, I encourage you to read my book, The Coming Revival: America's
Call to Fast, Pray, and "Seek God's Face." It will help equip you for the coming
spiritual awakening.
How long you will fast - one meal, one day, a week, several weeks, forty days
(Beginners should start slowly, building up to longer fasts.)
The type of fast God wants you to undertake (such as water only, or water and
juices; what kinds of juices you will drink and how often)
What physical or social activities you will restrict
How much time each day you will devote to prayer and God's Word
Making these commitments ahead of time will help you sustain your fast when
physical temptations and life's pressures tempt you to abandon it.
The very foundation of fasting and prayer is repentance. Unconfessed sin will hinder
your prayers. Here are several things you can do to prepare your heart:
Confess every sin that the Holy Spirit calls to your remembrance and accept
God's forgiveness (1 John 1:9).
Seek forgiveness from all whom you have offended, and forgive all who have
hurt you (Mark 11:25; Luke 11:4; 17:3,4).
Make restitution as the Holy Spirit leads you.
Ask God to fill you with His Holy Spirit according to His command in
Ephesians 5:18 and His promise in 1 John 5:14,15.
Surrender your life fully to Jesus Christ as your Lord and Master; refuse to
obey your worldly nature (Romans 12:1,2).
Meditate on the attributes of God, His love, sovereignty, power, wisdom,
faithfulness, grace, compassion, and others (Psalm 48:9,10; 103:1-8, 11-13).
Begin your time of fasting and prayer with an expectant heart (Hebrews 11:6).
Do not underestimate spiritual opposition. Satan sometimes intensifies the
natural battle between body and spirit (Galatians 5:16,17).
Prepare your body. Eat smaller meals before starting a fast. Avoid high-fat and
sugary foods.
Eat raw fruit and vegetables for two days before starting a fast.
Avoid drugs, even natural herbal drugs and homeopathic remedies. Medication
should be withdrawn only with your physician's supervision.
Exercise only moderately. Walk one to three miles each day if convenient and
comfortable.
Rest as much as your schedule will permit.
Prepare yourself for temporary mental discomforts, such as impatience,
crankiness, and anxiety.
Expect some physical discomforts, especially on the second day. You may have
fleeting hunger pains, dizziness, or the "blahs." Withdrawal from caffeine and
sugar may cause headaches. Physical annoyances may also include weakness,
tiredness, or sleeplessness.
The first two or three days are usually the hardest. As you continue to fast, you will
likely experience a sense of well-being both physically and spiritually. However,
should you feel hunger pains, increase your liquid intake.
Noon
Evening
Avoid television or any other distraction that may dampen your spiritual focus.
When possible, begin and end each day on your knees with your spouse for a brief
time of praise and thanksgiving to God. Longer periods of time with our Lord in prayer
and study of His Word are often better spent alone.
A dietary routine is vital as well. Dr. Julio C. Ruibal - a nutritionist, pastor, and
specialist in fasting and prayer - suggests a daily schedule and list of juices you may
find useful and satisfying. Modify this schedule and the drinks you take to suit your
circumstances and tastes.
5 a.m. - 8 a.m.
Fresh vegetable juice made from lettuce, celery, and carrots in three equal parts.
Herb tea with a drop of honey. Avoid black tea or any tea with caffeine.
Broth made from boiling potatoes, celery, and carrots with no salt. After boiling
about half an hour, pour the water into a container and drink it.
Drinking fruit juice will decrease your hunger pains and give you some natural
sugar energy. The taste and lift will motivate and strengthen you to continue.
The best juices are made from fresh watermelon, lemons, grapes, apples,
cabbage, beets, carrots, celery, or leafy green vegetables. In cold weather, you
may enjoy a warm vegetable broth.
Mix acidic juices (orange and tomato) with water for your stomach's sake.
Avoid caffeinated drinks. And avoid chewing gum or mints, even if your breath
is bad. They stimulate digestive action in your stomach.
A Final Word
STEP 7: Expect Results
If you sincerely humble yourself before the Lord, repent, pray, and seek God's face; if
you consistently meditate on His Word, you will experience a heightened awareness of
His presence (John 14:21). The Lord will give you fresh, new spiritual insights. Your
confidence and faith in God will be strengthened. You will feel mentally, spiritually,
and physically refreshed. You will see answers to your prayers.
A single fast, however, is not a spiritual cure-all. Just as we need fresh infillings of the
Holy Spirit daily, we also need new times of fasting before God. A 24-hour fast each
week has been greatly rewarding to many Christians.
It takes time to build your spiritual fasting muscles. If you fail to make it through your
first fast, do not be discouraged. You may have tried to fast too long the first time out,
or your may need to strengthen your understanding and resolve. As soon as possible,
undertake another fast until you do succeed. God will honor you for your faithfulness.
I encourage you to join me in fasting and prayer again and again until we truly
experience revival in our homes, our churches, our beloved nation, and throughout the
world.
Simply put, prayer is communicating with God. Real prayer is expressing our devotion
to our heavenly Father, inviting Him to talk to us as we talk to Him.
Q: To Whom Do We Pray?
We pray to the Father in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ through the ministry of the
Holy Spirit. when we pray to the Father, our prayers are accepted by Jesus Christ and
interpreted to God the Father by the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:26, 27,34).
Supplication includes petition for our own needs and intercession for others. Pray that
your inner person may be renewed, always sensitive to and empowered by the Holy
Spirit. Pray for others - your spouse, your children, your parents, neighbors, and
friends; our nation and those in authority over us. Pray for the salvation of souls, for a
daily opportunity to introduce others to Christ and to the ministry of the Holy Spirit,
and for the fulfillment of the Great Commission.
True Prosperity
How prosperous are you?
When asked that question, many people see dollar signs or take a quick inventory of
their worldly goods. What came to your mind? Did you think of cars, homes, boats,
jewelry, or a long awaited dream vacation?
While Biblical prosperity includes having enough money to do what God has called you
to do, it also includes having good health, peace of mind, good relationships, and much
more. The apostle John wrote, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in
health, just as your soul prospers (3 John 1:2). In this verse alone, you can see that
Biblical prosperity is multi-faceted. God desires that you would prosper in your spirit,
soul, and body. True prosperity is much more than money and the things it can buy.
Poverty vs. Prosperity
I knew a man in South America who lived in a tiny hut that took only two days to build.
He had a wife, a couple of children, a little plot of land with a few chickens, and wore
only a loin cloth. It might seem to you that he lived in a state of poverty, but he couldnt
imagine being more prosperous.
I knew another man who lived in a huge home on acres of land. He had a wife and two
children, a couple of expensive automobiles, membership in a country club for the elite,
and a big boat. Judging from appearances, youd say he was more prosperous than the
first man. But, was he really?
Contrary to popular opinion, true prosperity does not come from having large sums of
money or from possessing an abundance of this worlds treasures. Suppose the man with
all the stuff found out that he had cancer, or his wife left him for another man, or his
kids were on drugs. Would he be enjoying prosperity? What if everyone he knew hated
him, or he lived in constant fear? Would you still call him prosperous?
Spiritually Rich
Someone who is prosperous in Gods eyes is rich because of his spiritual condition. It
has nothing to do with his material possessions, but it has everything to do with his
relationship with God. Similarly, poverty is not the result of a poor financial state. In
reality, poverty is a destructive spirit sent from the devil to rob people. No one is poor just
because they have no money; they are poor because Satan has stolen their health, family,
relationships, or dreams.
Jesus told this parable in Luke 12:16-20: The ground of a certain rich man yielded
plentifully. He thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, since I have no room to
store my crops? So he said, I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build greater,
and there I will store all my crops and my goods. I will say to my soul, Soul, you have
many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry. But God
said to him, Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those
things be which you have provided? So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not
rich toward God. This man was a millionaire; yet God called him a fool! Like him, you
can have all of the things the world has to offer; but if you are not rich toward God, you
are not prosperous.
Seek God First
Some people make the mistake of seeking God only for what they can get from Him, but
Jesus said, seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things
will be added to you(Matthew 6:33). If you seek only after Gods blessing, you will miss
out on things that He wants to add to your life, but when you seek Him first, He is able to
bless you.
Faith makes a difference. Hebrews 11:6 says, Without faith it is impossible to please
Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those
who diligently seek Him. It makes a difference when you pray and read Gods Word. It
makes a difference when you worship. It makes a difference when you obey His Word
and when you give your tithes and offerings to God. All of these actions are related to
seeking God, and He will reward you as you seek Him first.
Success comes from doing things Gods way. You may have a good marriage, but if you
do not value marriage the way God does, you may lose it. The same is true with your
finances or any other area of your life. If you do not value what God has given you, you
may lose the blessing He intends. However, when you seek God more than you seek any
other thing, you will value what He values and consistently make good decisions.
As you get to know God better by praying and reading His Word, He is able to make
you prosper. He will also help you develop a lifestyle that enables you to maintain and
pass on that prosperity.
Generational Blessings
God is the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. He wants to be your God, your childrens
God, your grandchildrens and your great-grandchildrens God. He wants the prosperity
He gives you to flow from generation to generation. The apostle Paul spoke to Timothy
about this when he said, I call to remembrance the genuine faith that is in you, which
dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded is in
you also (II Timothy 1:5).
Gods will is for every area of your life and the lives of your descendents to be blessed.
For example, it is great if you have a good marriage. It is even better when your values
influence your children so they can have good marriages, too. It is good when you do
well financially, but it is even better when you pass on the ability to successfully manage
finances to the next generation.
When you are truly prosperous, you will teach your children to seek God first through
both your words and actions. They will learn by your example that faith and prosperity
can be passed on from generation to generation.
Dont Settle For Less
No one can afford to be satisfied with less than God wants to give, so why settle for
prosperity only in the financial or physical realm when it is available in every area of
your life? Jesus said, The thief does not come except to steal, kill, and to destroy. I have
come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly (John 10:10).
Remember, Satan is the one who causes sickness, disease, pain, poverty, and anything
else that brings lack into your life. Jesus overcame the power of the devil so you can have
an abundant life!
Proverbs 10:22 says, The blessing of the LORD makes one rich, and He adds no
sorrow with it. It is Gods blessing that makes you rich. As you seek Him first, He is
able to bless you and manifest His presence in your life. He becomes your sin-removing,
life-giving, truth-revealing, burden-bearing, problem-solving, joy-restoring, prosperitygranting God. In addition, the scripture says that He adds no sorrow with it.
True prosperity is so much more than money. You can prosper in every area of your life
as you grow spiritually thats Gods plan. He will supply everything you need and
even enable you to pass your prosperity on to your descendents when you:
(1) Seek Him first
(2) Have right values
(3) Make right decisions
(4) Live according to His Word.
My prayer for you is that you will live a life that is rich toward God so that you can be
truly prosperous. Dont settle for less!
Steps to
Financial Freedom
$ $$$$$$
This is an outline for finding financial freedom and prosperity. Please understand that the
outline covers many of the Biblical principles concerning finance, but is not totally
comprehensive.
I. Recognize that everything belongs to God by right of creation.
A. "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth" (Genesis 1:1).
B. "The earth is the LORD'S, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell
therein" (Psalm 24:1).
C. "The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, saith the LORD of hosts" (Haggai 2:8).
D. "For every beast of the forest is mine, and the cattle upon a thousand hills" (Psalm
50:10).
II. Understand that God is to be our source of wealth.
A. "But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ
Jesus" (Philippians 4:19).
B. "And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all
sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work" (II Corinthians 9:8).
C. "And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the fragments that remained
twelve baskets full" (Matthew 14:20).
D. "Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think
according to the power that worketh in us" (Ephesians 3:20).
E. "Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the LORD
keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain. It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit
up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep" (Psalm 127:1-2).
III. Believe that God desires to prosper you.
A. "Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as
thy soul prospereth" (III John 1:2).
B. "Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye
shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat,
and the body than raiment? Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do
they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much
better than they? Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?
And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow;
they toil not, neither do they spin: And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his
glory was not arrayed like one of these. Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the
field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe
you, O ye of little faith? Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What
shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? (For after all these things do the
Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things"
(Matthew 6:25-32).
C. "The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want" (Psalms 23:1).
D. "But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get
wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this
day" (Deuteronomy 8:18).
IV. Understand that God has already made the provision for you.
A. "According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and
godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue" (II Peter
1:3).
B. "A good man leaveth an inheritance to his children's children: and the wealth of the
sinner is laid up for the just" (Proverbs 13:22).
V. Be faithful in tithing and giving.
A. The tithe belongs to God. "And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the
land, or of the fruit of the tree, is the LORD'S: it is holy unto the LORD" (Leviticus
27:30).
B. To refuse to tithe is to rob God. "Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye
say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings" (Malachi 3:8).
C. The tithe should go to a local church. "Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that
there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts,
if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall
not be room enough to receive it" (Malachi 3:10).
D. The tithe is on the gross income. "Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the
firstfruits of all thine increase: So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses
shall burst out with new wine" (Proverbs 3:9-10). "The first of the firstfruits of thy land
thou shalt bring into the house of the LORD thy God" (Exodus 23:19a)..
E. Jesus taught tithing is a New Testament principle. "Woe unto you, scribes and
Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted
the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done,
and not to leave the other undone" (Matthew 23:23).
F. God is our first debtor (pay tithe first). "But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his
righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you" (Matthew 6:33).
G. God challenges us to put Him to the test. "Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse,
that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of
hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that
there shall not be room enough to receive it" (Malachi 3:10).
H. God promises to rebuke the devourer for us. "And I will rebuke the devourer for your
sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her
fruit before the time in the field, saith the LORD of hosts" (Malachi 3:11).
I. GOD'S WAY is: (free will offering directed by God)
1. "Take ye from among you an offering unto the LORD: whosoever is of a willing heart,
let him bring it, an offering of the LORD; gold, and silver and brass, . . ." (Exodus 35:5).
2. "And they came, every one whose heart stirred him up, and every one whom his spirit
make willing, and they brought the LORD's offering to the work of the tabernacle of the
congregation, and for all his service, and . . ." (Exodus 35:21)
3. "And they spake unto Moses, saying, The people bring much more than enough for the
service of the work, which the LORD commanded to make" (Exodus 36:5) & (see 35:2136:7).
4. "For the stuff they had was sufficient for all the work to make it, and too much"
(Exodus 36:7).
5. "I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and
to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to
receive" (Acts 20:35).
VI. Practice sowing in faith.
A. "Cast thy bread upon the waters: for thou shalt find it after many days" (Ecclesiastes
11:1).
B. "In the morning sow thy seed, and in the evening withhold not thine hand: for thou
knowest not whether shall prosper, either this or that, or whether they both shall be alike
good" (Ecclesiastes 11:6).
C. "Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken
together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure
that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again" (Luke 6:38).
D. "But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which
soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully. Every man according as he purposeth in
his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful
giver. And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all
sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work: (As it is written, He hath
dispersed abroad; he hath given to the poor: his righteousness remaineth for ever. Now
he that ministereth seed to the sower both minister bread for your food, and multiply your
seed sown, and increase the fruits of your righteousness;) Being enriched in every thing
to all bountifulness, which causeth through us thanksgiving to God. For the
administration of this service not only supplieth the want of the saints, but is abundant
also by many thanksgivings unto God; Whiles by the experiment of this ministration
they glorify God for your professed subjection unto the gospel of Christ, and for your
liberal distribution unto them, and unto all men; And by their prayer for you, which
long after you for the exceeding grace of God in you" (II Corinthians 9:6-14).
E. "Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also
reap" (Galatians 6:7).
VII. Check your motives concerning giving.
A. Don't give just because someone asks you to give. "Every man according as he
purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a
cheerful giver" (II Corinthians 9:7).
B. Don't give just because there is a need. "of necessity"
C. Give cheerfully.
D. Give in faith believing that God will produce the harvest. "Now he that ministereth
seed to the sower both minister bread for your food, and multiply your seed sown, and
increase the fruits of your righteousness" (II Corinthians 9:10).
E. Give generously. "There is that scattereth, and yet increaseth; and there is that
withholdeth more than is meet, but it tendeth to poverty. The liberal soul shall be made
fat: and he that watereth shall be watered also himself" (Proverbs 11:24-25).
VIII. Learn to wisely USE what God has already given to you.
A. "And the LORD said unto him, What is that in thine hand? And he said, A rod"
(Exodus 4:2). What do you have in your hand?
B. Elijah asked the widow to use her last meal and oil to fix him a cake. (I Kings 17:1016).
C. Jesus used the five loaves and two fish. "He saith unto them, How many loaves have
ye? go and see. And when they knew, they say, Five, and two fishes. And he
commanded them to make all sit down by companies upon the green grass. And they sat
down in ranks, by hundreds, and by fifties. And when he had taken the five loaves and
the two fishes, he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and brake the loaves, and gave them
to his disciples to set before them; and the two fishes divided he among them all" (Mark
6:38-41).
D. In the parable of the talents we find the principle of "use it or lose it". Matthew 25:1430.
1. Men of faith use what God has given them, expecting God to produce the increase.
2. Fearful men hide what God has given them, because they look at their own ability to
produce an increase.
3. God gives even more to the faithful men and takes away that which has given to the
unfaithful.
IX. Check your financial practices.
A. Don't buy on credit.
1. It violates God's direct command in His Word. "Owe no man any thing, but to love
one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law" (Romans 13:8).
2. To "owe" brings one under legal bondage. "The rich ruleth over the poor, and the
borrower is servant to the lender" (Proverbs 22:7).
3. To "owe" brings one under mental bondage. From the moment we sign till be pay, the
burden rests in our minds. "Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow
shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof"
(Matthew 6:34).
4. To "owe" is to presume on the future that we will have the money available. "Go to
now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a
year, and buy and sell, and get gain: Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow.
For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then
vanisheth away" (James 4:13-14).
5. To "owe" causes us to limit God. We are tempting to do things our way rather than
God's way. "But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by
Christ Jesus" (Philippians 4:19).
6. To say, "I have credit cards in case of an emergency" is to put faith in "credit cards"
rather than God. It is an act of fear. " For the thing which I greatly feared is come upon
me, and that which I was afraid of is come unto me. {the thing...: Heb. I feared a fear, and
it came upon me} I was not in safety, neither had I rest, neither was I quiet; yet trouble
came" (Job 3:25-26). David in contrast said, "Yea, though I walk through the valley of
the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they
comfort me" (Psalms 23:4).
7. To "owe" messes up your financial standing. The money is no longer yours or God's, it
is your creditors. "The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, saith the LORD of hosts"
(Haggai 2:8).
8. "Credit cards are designed for impulsive shopping. "For the flesh lusteth against the
Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that
ye cannot do the things that ye would" (Galatians 5:17).
9. Using "credit" often makes it extremely difficult to keep up with the amount that you
owe, thus making it easy to owe more than you can pay by the due date. "No man that
warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath
chosen him to be a soldier" (II Timothy 2:4).
10. "Credit Cards" and "credit purchases" also entail a credit system which brings
additional costs to the retailer or seller who must pass that cost along to you in that form
of a price increase in MDSE that you buy if or not you pay cash for it or charge it.
Therefore you have less to use in the kingdom.
11. In such cases where the head of the house dies and has credit bills outstanding, there
may be needless burden placed upon the family to pay the debts. This would be defraud
by circumstances. " Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not
kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honour thy father and mother"
(Mark 10:19).
12. Indebtedness is a curse of God's judgment. "He (a stranger) shall lend to thee, and
thou shalt not lend to him: he shall be the head, and thou shalt be the tail. Moreover all
these curses shall come upon thee, and shall purse thee, and overtake thee, till thou be
destroyed ...." (Deuteronomy 28:44-45).
B. Don't go into partnership. "No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs
of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier" (II Timothy
2:4).
1. In a partnership there is no "head".
2. If God disciplines one, the other will also suffer the consequences.
C. Don't co-sign loans.
1. "My son, if thou be surety for thy friend, if thou hast stricken thy hand with a
stranger, Thou art snared with the words of thy mouth, thou art taken with the words of
thy mouth. Do this now, my son, and deliver thyself, when thou art come into the hand
of thy friend; go, humble thyself, and make sure thy friend. Give not sleep to thine eyes,
nor slumber to thine eyelids. Deliver thyself as a roe from the hand of the hunter, and as
a bird from the hand of the fowler" (Proverbs 6:1-5).
2. "A man void of understanding striketh hands, and becometh surety in the presence of
his friend" (Proverbs 17:18).
3. "Be not thou one of them that strike hands, or of them that are sureties for debts"
(Proverbs 22:26).
4. "Take his garment that is surety for a stranger, and take a pledge of him for a strange
woman" (Proverbs 27:13).
D. Avoid get-rich-quick schemes.
1. "He that is slow to wrath is of great understanding: but he that is hasty of spirit exalteth
folly" (Proverbs 14:29).
2. "The thoughts of the diligent tend only to plenteousness; but of every one that is hasty
only to want" (Proverbs 21:5).
3. "A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself; but the simple pass on, and are
punished" (Proverbs 27:12).
4. "He that tilleth his land shall have plenty of bread: but he that followeth after vain
persons shall have poverty enough" (Proverbs 28:19).
5. "He that hasteth to be rich hath an evil eye, and considereth not that poverty shall come
upon him" (Proverbs 28:22).
E. Seek wise counsel in finances.
1. "The way of a fool is right in his own eyes: but he that hearkeneth unto counsel is
wise" (Proverbs 12:15).
2. "Poverty and shame shall be to him that refuseth instruction: but he that regardeth
reproof shall be honoured" (Proverbs 13:18).
3. "Without counsel purposes are disappointed: but in the multitude of counsellors they
are established" (Proverbs 15:22).
X. Check your attitudes toward money.
A. Don't be selfish. "There is that scattereth, and yet increaseth; and there is that
withholdeth more than is meet, but it tendeth to poverty. The liberal soul shall be made
fat: and he that watereth shall be watered also himself" (Proverbs 11:24-25).
B. Don't be dishonest. "Divers weights are an abomination unto the LORD; and a false
balance is not good" (Proverbs 20:23). "He that by usury and unjust gain increaseth his
substance, he shall gather it for him that will pity the poor" (Proverbs 28:8).
C. Don't be greedy. "He that is greedy of gain troubleth his own house; but he that hateth
gifts shall live" (Proverbs 15:27).
D. Don't love money. "For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some
coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many
sorrows" (I Timothy 6:10).
XI. Check your attitudes toward work.
A. Don't be lazy. "He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand: but the hand of the
diligent maketh rich" (Proverbs 10:4). "The soul of the sluggard desireth, and hath
nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat" (Proverbs 13:4). "The hand of
the diligent shall bear rule: but the slothful shall be under tribute" (Proverbs 12:24). "He
also that is slothful in his work is brother to him that is a great waster" (Proverbs 18:9).
"The desire of the slothful killeth him; for his hands refuse to labour" (Proverbs 21:25).
B. One who is not willing to work should not eat. "For even when we were with you,
this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat" (II
Thessalonians 3:10).
C. Don't labor to get rich. "Labour not to be rich: cease from thine own wisdom"
(Proverbs 23:4).
D. Be diligent. "Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings;
he shall not stand before mean men" (Proverbs 22:29).
E. Don't be a drunkard. "For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and
drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags" (Proverbs 23:21).
XII. Use fasting and prayer as means of reaching financial freedom.
A. Basic Scripture: "Is it such a fast that I have chosen? a day for a man to afflict his
soul? is it to bow down his head as a bulrush, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under
him? wilt thou call this a fast, and an acceptable day to the LORD? Is not this the fast
that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to
let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke? Is it not to deal thy bread to the
hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the
naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh? Then
shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and
thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the LORD shall be thy rereward.
Then shalt thou call, and the LORD shall answer; thou shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I
am. If thou take away from the midst of thee the yoke, the putting forth of the finger, and
speaking vanity; And if thou draw out thy soul to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted
soul; then shall thy light rise in obscurity, and thy darkness be as the noonday: And the
LORD shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy
bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters
fail not. And they that shall be of thee shall build the old waste places: thou shalt raise
up the foundations of many generations; and thou shalt be called, The repairer of the
breach, The restorer of paths to dwell in. If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath,
from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the
LORD, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine
own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words: Then shalt thou delight thyself in the
LORD; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with
the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it" (Isaiah 58:514).
B. Learn to be content. "Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in
whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content" (Philippians 4:11). "And having food
and raiment let us be therewith content" (I Timothy 6:8).
C. Give to the poor.
1. "He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the LORD; and that which he hath given
will he pay him again" (Proverbs 19:17).
2. "Whoso stoppeth his ears at the cry of the poor, he also shall cry himself, but shall not
be heard" (Proverbs 21:13).
3. "He that hath a bountiful eye shall be blessed; for he giveth of his bread to the poor"
(Proverbs 22:9).
4. "He that oppresseth the poor to increase his riches, and he that giveth to the rich, shall
surely come to want" (Proverbs 22:16).
5. "He that giveth unto the poor shall not lack: but he that hideth his eyes shall have many
a curse" (Proverbs 28:27).
6. "Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the
poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me" (Matthew 19:21).
D. Ask God in faith to bless you financially.
1. "For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou
removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe
that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith"
(Mark 11:23).
2. "But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must
believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him" (Hebrew
11:6).
E. Claim the promises of God found in the Word.
1. "A man's belly shall be satisfied with the fruit of his mouth; and with the increase of
his lips shall he be filled" (Proverbs 18:20).
2. "He {Abraham} staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong
in faith, giving glory to God" (Romans 4:20).
3. "For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God
by us" (II Corinthians 1:20).
4. "Then said he unto them, Therefore every scribe which is instructed unto the kingdom
of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which bringeth forth out of his
treasure things new and old" (Matthew 13:52).
NOTE: If you have completed all the above twelve steps and still find that you are not
prospering, it may be that God is trying your faith. "And he shall sit as a refiner and
purifier of silver: and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver,
that they may offer unto the LORD an offering in righteousness" (Malachi 3:3). "That
the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be
tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus
Christ" (I Peter 1:7). "Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to
try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you" (I Peter 4:12). "I counsel thee
to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou
mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine
eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see" (Revelation 3:18). "My brethren, count it all
joy when ye fall into divers temptations; {temptation: or, trials} Knowing this, that the
trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye
may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing" (James 1:2-4).
Scriptures on Prosperity
John 1:2 "Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health,
even as thy soul prospereth."
Job 36:11 "If they obey and serve him, they shall spend their days in prosperity, and their
years in pleasures."
Joshua 1:8 "This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt

written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have
good success."
Psalms 1:1-3 "Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor
standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in
the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like
a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also
shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper."
Psalms 35:27 "Let them shout for joy, and be glad, that favour my righteous cause: yea,
let them say continually, Let the LORD be magnified, which hath pleasure in the
prosperity of his servant."
Psalms 84:11 "For the LORD God is a sun and shield: the LORD will give grace and
glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly."

in Lebanon."
Psalms 122:6 "Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: they shall prosper that love thee."
