High Skills Major


Why choose a Business SHSM?
It offers an experiential education program with a business focus. Business Specialist High Skills Major students will
engage in learning and experiences that will be an asset for a future in business and related fields.

Who would be interested in the program?


Students who:
have successfully completed grade 10
are passionate about business studies
are looking to be engaged in authentic business experiences beyond the classroom
want to make more informed career decisions and ultimately be better prepared for their post-secondary
goals
want to further develop employability skills in business

What is involved in the Business SHSM?


Students will take a minimum of four Business courses taken in Grade 11 or Grade 12.
Grade 11:
1 or 2 major business credits are chosen in year one
of the program. Your destination (i.e. apprenticeship,
workplace, college, university) will affect which
courses you select.

All Business SHSM students will complete:

A minimum of four (4) Business courses


Contextualized Business units in both English and Math
Certifications recognized by the business sector (ie. WHMIS and Management training)
A two credit cooperative education component
Job twin or job shadow in the business field

Upon completion and graduation:

Students will receive a red seal on their secondary school diploma


A record which outlines their achievements and certifications

Additional Information:
Applying to the SHSM Business program does not limit student choices should they wish to pursue other academic interests (eg. science, arts, physical
education)
It offers multiple pathways to all four post-secondary destinations the workplace, apprenticeship, college or university. The SHSM Program will
address the needs of all students in their pursuit of careers or jobs in the business world.
Students have opportunities to explore a wide variety of different aspects of business. SHSM also allows for experiential learning through unique
experiences such as meeting with local entrepreneurs, participating in the DECA program, applying for Summer Company, taking part in numerous offcampus activities and visiting post-secondary business institutions, such as Niagara College and Brock University.
Students will develop leadership, management, teamwork, and problem solving skills with this unique experience. Ultimately, students will attain the
credits, skills, and knowledge that is critical in the field of Business. The SHSM Program helps students better prepare for life in a changing world.
