Information Literacy

1. Topic Chosen: Mobile Technology

A) Keywords used to find scholarly articles: Impact, Mobile, Technology.
B) Database used: ProQuest
C) I chose to use ProQuest for several reasons. First, it is a legitimate
database to find peer reviewed articles and articles backed by research and
studies. Second, I have used this database in the past and have found it to
more than adequate in both the quality and quantity of the results returned.
Lastly, I am familiar with its layout and format and understand how to filter
the results in order to get the most relevant information.
D) MLA Citation for article 1:

Life." European

2. Internet article on the same subject:

A) This article briefly states the findings of recent studies conducted on
companies that have adopted mobile technology. Specifically, its impact on
employees. The author goes on to state that companies that have adopted
mobile technology generally have more loyal and productive employees and
represents this data using various visual aids.

4. TRAAP (I am using article from step 3)

A) This article was written approximately one week ago, and has not needed
to be updated.
B) The article relates to my topic of choice quite well. It discusses the impact
mobile devices have had on the workplace from the intern to the CEO, both
positive and negative.

C) One of the countrys most experienced and prolific business writers, Mark
Henricks has written more than 1,000 articles on business, technology and
investing, including Entrepreneur Magazines monthly Cutting Edge small
business management column. This brief introduction of the author seems
to identify him as a credible source with the right qualifications to write an
article on the topic at hand.
D) The information presented by the author seems to be accurate. As a
reader of the article, I can personally relate to several of his arguments. The
author also cites several studies and surveys in his article that support his
arguments.
E) The authors main purpose in writing this article is to inform the reader
how mobile technology is changing the way small and medium businesses
operate, and how to make it work for you. The material seems objective due
to discussing both the pros and cons of mobile devices impacts on the
workplace.
5. Scholarly v. Internet sources:
A) For the general public, laymen, or chronologically advanced, the internet
is much easier, and more practical to use. A simple google search can return
close to a billion results. The advantage of a database is the credibility of the
information, and with a little time and patience, is quite easy to master and
certainly worthwhile.
B) In the short term, an internet search is much quicker. But when credible
information is desired, a database is the most efficient route to finding the

information you need. Sifting through all 160,000,000 results for the one key
piece of information needed is a colossal waste of time that could be better
spent on a database with much fewer, but much higher quality results.
C) The authority of a scholarly, peer reviewed journal from an accredited
source or university will always have more weight than an internet search
with a Wikipedia answer. But if the information is of a different nature, say
sports, websites such as ESPN.go.com will carry more weight due to the
experts who specifically focus on nothing but sports, or even played them at
a high level.
