Nomenclature

Introduction
This training guide provides a step-by-step procedure for identifying the nomenclature for
SEW products. An understanding of nomenclature is essential for several reasons:
To identify existing products in the field
To reduce miscommunications upon ordering
To help identify spare units in inventory

Goal
The goal of this manual is to familarize the reader with available options, and with the logic
used to generate nomenclature. Wherever possible, graphics are included to illustrate
particular features or concepts.

Audience
This manual is essential for salesmen, distributors, purchasing agents, and anyone else
who specifies SEW products. Since it eliminates memorization, it is particularly useful for
the novice person who infrequently orders SEW products. It is also very useful for any
person who wants to know the particular features on the SEW products within his/her
plant.

Overview and Rules

Overview and Rules

Nomenclature
Nameplates
SEW identifies products and most options by either
a letter, a number, or a letter/number combination.
The sum of all letters and numbers is called the
products model number, or nomenclature. It
appears on the stainless steel nameplate attached
to the gear reducer and/or motor.
SEW products contain either one or two
nameplates. An integral gearmotor consisting of a
gear reducer and an SEW integral motor has two
nameplates - one on the gear reducer, and one on
the motor, as shown in Figure 1.
A gearbox without a motor (such as a C-Face gear
reducer) has only one nameplate, as shown in
Figure 2.

Overview and Rules

Nomenclature

Figures 3 and 4 are pictures of both nameplates.

The first line is the Type field, which displays the
nomenclature described within this book.
The second line contains an SO#, or Sales Order
number. Even though the two nameplates have
the same SO#, the nomenclature on the reducer
nameplate differs from the nomenclature on the
motor nameplate.
The Motor nameplate does not contain
information about the gearbox. However, it does
contains all of the electrical data about the motor.
Therefore, the motor nameplate is widely used
during installation.
The Reducer nameplate contains motor
nomenclature, but no motor data. However, it
contains all gearbox data. Thus, SEW
recommends using the reducer nameplate when
ordering replacement parts, spares, etc.

Nomenclature
Sequence and Fields
This section explains the proper sequence in which to
place the letters or numbers within the nomenclature.
Nomenclature begins at the output shaft of the gear
reducer and ends at the motor.
To understand the logic, products are divided into fields
with names. Figure 5 below is the diagram of a
gearmotor from Chapter 2. Notice that it has 13 fields.
The names of the fields are listed below the picture.

Overview and Rules

Nomenclature
What is a field?
A field is a category that contains a list of options from
which to choose. Each option has either a letter,
multiple letters, or a combination of letters/numbers
assigned to it.
For example, Field #1 represents the Gear Type
category that has six options: Helical-Parallel (x2),
the
Snuggler, Helical-bevel, Helical-worm, and Hypoid.
Each of these options has either one or two letters
assigned to it. The letter F denotes theSnuggler.
For theSnuggler, begin by aligning all 13 fields into a
row. Next, place the letter, F, in Field #1, as shown
below.

To establish the entire nomenclature, fill in each field

with all required options, as shown in the following
example.

Note: Blank fields are acceptable. Refer to Rule 1 on

the next page.

When finished, add the letters and numbers together,

eliminating all blanks, to obtain the following:

Overview and Rules

Nomenclature
Rules
The following rules ensure that all options appear in the proper sequence.
Rule 1:

Skip a field and leave it blank if none of its options are needed.

Rule 2:

Choose only one option from each field, unless otherwise noted.
In most fields, it is physically impossible to combine more than one option within
the same field, such as a hollowshaft and a solid shaft. However, there are a few
fields where multiple options are possible, such as the Mechanical Variable
Speed (Field #6).
Multiple options are available when the field contains the words, Select all that
apply beneath it, as shown below.

Mechanical Variable Speed

(Select all that apply)

Rule 3:

Place the letters in the order as they appear on the page.

In the fields that allow multiple options, place the letters in the order as they
appear on the page. The correct order is down and across the page, as
illustrated in Figure 6 below. When there are too many options to show on one
page, the field number contains a letter after it to indicate multiple pages. For
example, the Mechanical Variable Speed field contains four pages, labeled 6a, 6b,
6c and 6d.
6a

6b

Figure 6 - Correct Order for Options

Overview and Rules

Nomenclature

Rule 4:

Select only the options that are available for your reducer.
Depending upon the type of gear reducer
in Field #1, some options may not be
available. For example, with a type R
gearmotor shown in Figure 7, it is not
possible to receive a hollowshaft.
Therefore, in order for you to know which
gearbox accepts which option, the lower
right corner of the option block contains
letters, as shown in Figure 8.

Hollowshaft + Key

Figure 7 - Type R

These letters correspond to the types

of reducers that accept the option.
This hollowshaft option, for example,
does not have a letter R in the lower
right corner. Therefore, a hollowshaft
is not available with a type R gear
reducer.

F K S W
Figure 8 - Hollowshaft

As another example, notice that the Torque

Arm option in Figure 9 contains the letters
S and K in the lower right corner. Therefore, this option is available for a type S
reducer (Helical-worm) and a type K
reducer (Helical-bevel).
However, neither an F nor an R appear
in the lower right of the torque arm option.
Thus, it is not available for a type F
(theSnuggler) or a type R (Helical-Parallel).

NOTE: If the lower right corner is blank (no letters), then the
option is available on all gear reducer types.

Rule 5:

Identify in which Chapter of this book to begin.

Each chapter contains different products, along with different fields and options.
It is important to know in which chapter of the book to begin. The title of each chapter
appropriately identifies the products contained within it. However, the following steps
also provide guidance, when performed in the proper order.

Thermistors
(Variable Resistors)

Each of the three phases of the stator winding

contains a variable resistor (varistor). Its
resistance changes with heat and is measured by a trip control, such as an SEW
Movidrive or ABBs CM-MSS (also available
from SEW).

With a trip control device, a normally closed

contact on the device is placed in series with
the users motor holding circuit. When
excessive heat causes the resistance in any
varistor to reach a set value, three things
occur in sequence: 1. The contact opens.
2. The holding circuit disengages. 3. The
motor stops.

Thermostats
(Bi-metallic Switches)

Each of the three phases of the stator

winding contains a thermostat, consisting of
a normally closed bi-metallic strip. All three
thermostats are placed in series with the
holding circuit of the users motor starter.
Excessive heat causes the bi-metallic strip
to expand, opening the circuit to stop the
motor.

Nomenclature
Flange/Shaft Combinations
There are a few versions of the flange/shaft combination that are available for a Varimot or Varigear.
The nomenclature remains the same for all versions. For example, a flanged Varimot always has
the letters DF in Field #1 regardless if the Varimot mounts to an SEW gearbox, to a customers
machine, or to an IEC motor adapter. Since the model number is the same, the correct version
must be specified when ordering. The shaft diameter and the orientation of the flange holes identify
the version type, as explained below.

Nomenclature

Inch Version
Includes a inch-series shaft diameter and key. The shaft contains a centering hole, which is tapered
but not threaded, to aid with the removal of sprockets, couplings, etc. The inch version is only
available on a flanged Varimot, not on a flanged Varigear. Depending upon the size of the
Varimot, either one, two, or three metric flanges are available - each containing a 45o bolt pattern.
To obtain the correct flange size, specify the BD dimension of the flange (outer diameter) when
ordering.
IEC Version
Includes a metric shaft, metric key, and a flange with a 45o bolt pattern. The center of the output
shaft contains a threaded hole with a tapered end. The taper acts as a centering device to assist
the removal of components from the shaft, while the threads provide support for a retaining bolt
when mounting components onto the shaft. Depending on the size of the unit, either one, two, or
three flange sizes are available. One of the flanges contains a hole pattern and diameter that
matches the dimensions of a standard IEC motor. To obtain the correct flange size, specify the
BD dimension of the flange (outer diameter) when ordering.
Gearbox Version
Includes a metric pinion shaft, a snapring, and a flange with a 90o bolt pattern. Since the flange
mates to an SEW gearbox, the flange contains an oil plug. The plug serves as either a breather
location or as an oil level indicator, depending upon the mounting position. To obtain the correct
flange size when ordering, specify the model number of the gearbox to which the unit attaches.
The gearbox version also contains an oil slinger on the output shaft. When the pinion gear rotates,
the gear teeth propel oil contaminates at a high velocity, which could cause seal damage or oil
leakage. The slinger serves as a protective barrier between the seal and the oil.
If necessary, SEW can provide a pinion gear mounted onto the output shaft. However, in order to
ensure the correct gear when ordering, please specify the reducer model number and ratio to which
the unit attaches.

Thermistors
(Variable Resistors)

Each of the three phases of the stator

winding contains a variable resistor (varistor).
Its resistance changes with heat and is
measured by a trip control, such as ABBs
CM-MSS (available from SEW).
A normally closed contact on the trip control
device is placed in series with the users
motor holding circuit. When excessive heat
causes the resistance in any varistor to reach
a set value, three things occur in sequence:
1. The contact opens. 2. The holding circuit
disengages. 3. The motor stops.

(Bi-metallic Switches)

Each of the three phases of the stator winding

contains a thermostat, consisting of a normally
closed bi-metallic strip. All three thermostats
are placed in series with the holding circuit of
the users motor starter. Excessive heat
causes the bi-metallic strip to expand and open
the circuit to stop the motor.
Class F or Class H available.

Motor without Gear Reducer

Nomenclature
Flange/Shaft Combinations
The nomenclature for a flanged motor is the same, regardless of the flange diameter or the shaft
diameter. In order to receive the correct configuration, specify the shaft type and the outer diameter
(BD dimension) of the flange when ordering.
Three types of flanged motors are available, as shown below.

Nomenclature

IEC Version
Includes a metric shaft and key. The center of the output shaft contains a threaded hole with a
tapered end. The taper acts as a centering device to assist the removal of components from the
shaft, while the threads provide support for a retaining bolt when mounting components onto the
shaft. The flange diameter, bolt pattern, shaft diameter, and shaft length match the dimensions of a
standard IEC motor. Thus, the IEC version can replace an IEC motor from other manufacturers.

Alternate Version
Includes a metric shaft and key. The center of the output shaft contains a threaded hole with a
tapered end. The taper acts as a centering device to assist the removal of components from the
shaft, while the threads provide support for a retaining bolt when mounting components onto the
shaft. The alternate version differs from the IEC version in that the flange/shaft combination does
not match a standard IEC motor. The flange is either larger or smaller than an IEC motor. Alternate
flange sizes allow the customer greater mounting flexibility. Depending on the motor size, either one
or two alternate flanges are available with either a 45o or a 90o bolt pattern. To obtain the correct
flange size, specify the BD dimension of the flange (outer diameter) when ordering.

To ensure the correct
flange size, specify the gearbox model number when ordering.
To ensure the correct
gear, specify the ratio of the mating gearbox when ordering.
