Increasing Students Skill in Multiplication Basic Facts through Domino

Aida Ibrahim (2006) carried out an action research in order to help out the students from
Year 5 Arif, Sekolah Kebangsaan Seri Kampung Tengah, Kluang, Johor, improving their
skills in multiplication basic facts till 9 x 9 via a domino game.

There were six Year 5 pupils and one teacher involved in this research. Initial review
was done through observation, interviews, questionnaires, exercises and pre-test. The
results showed that the students were weak in multiplication basic facts. Since they could
not memorize the multiplication basic facts, therefore it caused the pupils to take a long
time to resolve questions related to multiplication.

According to Aida Ibrahim (2006), a planned action was done to enhance the
students skills in multiplication basic facts. Counseling sessions were conducted out of
the teaching and learning periods for four weeks from Monday to Thursday. The time for
each session was an hour.

Information from observation and interview showed that there was an increase in
interest, attitude and student achievement in mathematics. After the action research was

carried out, the post-test results showed the increase in student performance. On the
whole, this action research was able to improve the quality of teachers teaching practices
and also pupils' learning skills in multiplication basic facts till 9 x 9.

From GRID to Jadual Sifir Pelbagai Guna (JSPG)

According to Janting Ak Ringkai & Jamin Nangtang (2006), this study attempted to
identify an appropriate approach to help students in order to master multiplication tables.
In this study, the main focus was using the technique of completing 100 grids for Jadual
Sifir Pelbagai Guna (JSPG) in order to master multiplication tables. Various approaches
were introduced to facilitate students to complete the 100 grids. The study found that a
slow learner was able to complete the 100 grid easier by repeated addition. Besides that,
the study also discovered that repetitious exercise was able to help a student to build
JSPG well.
