CMR - Historical Detectives

Packet

A friend of mine Frank Linderman has been trying to get a

bill passed for a strip of land for the Chippaway and Cree
Indians . . . These people have been on the verge of
starvation for years and I think it no more than square for
Uncle Sam, who has opened the west to all foreigners, to
give these real Americans enough to live on.
Charles M. Russell to Senator Henry L. Myers, January
11, 1913

This is the onley real American. He fought an died for

his country. to day he has no vote, no country and is
not a citizen but history will not forget him.
Charles M. Russell to Charles N. Pray, January 5,
1914

MAJOR MORGAN ORDERED TO LOOK AFTER CREE INDIANS

Major Morgan of the Jocko agency, received orders last week to proceed to Helena and look after some
starving Indians. He went to Helena at once and found a number of them encamped on the military reservation,
without any means of subsistence, and after thoroughly investigating conditions reported to the department at
Washington just what he found. The Indians are a bunch of gypsies who have made it the practice to hang
around Helena, Butte, Anaconda and other Montana towns for several years past and what to do or what can be
done with them is a problem. The Major returned from Helena Tuesday by way of Kalispell, meeting Dr.
Heidelman at Polson, the latter having been on an official visit to Camas, returning home that way. They were
both in Ronan the same day.

Miss Montana, Father I have thrown my lands open to

the world. These are Americons, have I nothing for
them?
Uncle Sam, No my child not as long as the land hog
has control. He is the only animal known that lives
without a heart.
