Web 2.0: The Second Generation of the Internet

Web 2.0 Tools benefit
collaborative work without
removing the individual or selfpaced control (Schrum & Levin,
2015, p. 114).

Web 2.0: Free and Ubiquitous

Because many Web 2.0 tools
are free, and anyone with a
robust Internet connection can
contribute online, they level
the playing field for
collaborators worldwide
(Schrum & Levin, 2015, p.
115).

Web 2.0: Fostering Creativity

Web 2.0 tools are now
allowing creativity to be
a more easily
incorporated skill to
build on, such as with
VoiceThread, Voki,
Toondoo, Pixton, Comic
Creator, and Photo &
Video online editing.

Social Media and Collaboration

Social Media sites,
along with the
momentum of Open
Source, allows for
collectives to expand
on the ideas of one
another, only leading
to improved ideas
(Britta Riley)

Co-Developing Through Open Source

Co-developing is made
possible by reaching out by
creating a social media site,
sharing ones own projects in
great detail, in order for
others to understand and
take on the project for
themselves (Riley).

The Culture of Collaboration

According to Britta Riley, collaboration spurs on a
unique culture:
(1)
(2)
(3)
(4)

Test first
Be supportive
Recognize diversity
One thing at a time

Leading to Changes in Consumerism

In order to see much
needed changes in the
consumer-based society,
the world needs people to
ditch the term consumer
and get behind the people
who are doing stuff
(Britta Riley)

21st Century Schools: Growing Mindsets with

Web 2.0 Tools and Social Media
Wikis, blogs,
microblogs, podcasts, &
vodcasts exemplify how
administrators,
educators and students
could interact online.

Twitter: #21stcenturyschools

Microblogging, especially
with Twitter, helps to
establish endless
collectives of ideas!
(Schrum & Levin, 2015,
p. 123)

Bookmarking Resources
Educational bookmarking, such as
Delicious, Diigo, and Symbaloo
allow educators to create lists of
links specifically for any class or
assignment. But most importantly,
educators can organize all their
bookmarks in a useful way with
tags so that a particular one is
easily displayed (Schrum & Levin,
2015, p. 127).
