Atomic Radii

Just as the size of an orbital cannot be


specified exactly, neither can the size of an
atom.
We must make some arbitrary
choices to obtain values for atomic radii.

These values can be obtained by measuring
the distances between atoms in chemical
compounds. (p95, 3)

Distance of BrBr = 2r = 228 pm,


Radius = r = 114 pm (covalent atomic radii)

Atomic Radii
For nonmetallic atoms that do not form
diatomic molecules, the atomic radii are
estimated from their various covalent
compounds. (p95, 4)
The radii for metal atoms (called metallic
radii) are obtained from half the distance
between metal atoms in solid metal crystals.
