Middle School Mathematics

Miss Fallstick, February 2016

6th Grade Math: Students learned how to add, subtract, multiply and divide integers! In order to visualize
the meaning of positive and negative numbers, students used integer tiles, color coding, and hands-on
manipulatives to understand how to solve problems with positive and negative numbers. Currently,
students are learning how to solve expressions by applying order of operations. Order of operations were
created so that everyone would follow the same system when solving equations with multiple steps. UP
NEXT: evaluating algebraic expressions
7th Grade Math: Students learned how to solve equations with combining like terms and applying
distributive property! In order to solve multi-step equations, students reviewed how to solve one and two
step equations. Students learned how to apply color coding and shape coding strategies to solve the
equations and organize their work. Students had to write an equation to represent a real-world situation.
Currently, students are applying their knowledge of equations to solve one and two step inequalities where
x can represent multiple solutions..
8th Grade Math: Students learned how to solve equations with variables on both sides of the equal sign!
They applied their knowledge of equations to solve for the unknown variable. Students had to write an
equation to represent the real-world situation Currently, students are learning how to graph equations in
slope-intercept form. Students created a flip-chart to help visualize the equation and learned how to
identify the slope (m) and y-intercept (b). We will be applying the equation to real-world situations to
reinforce the concept!
