Question 2B (20 marks)

Read the text below.
ELEPHANTS
Elephants are very special animals. Despite being the largest land animals on Earth, they can
travel long distances in one day. They also have tusks which allow them to dig for water and
find food.
Wild elephants live only in Africa and Asia. They can grow up to 4 metres tall and weigh more
than six tons. They can live for a long time - up to 70 years.
Another interesting fact about elephants is that they are herbivores, that is, they only eat plants,
roots, grass and fruits. They have enormous appetites and need a lot of food to stay in good
health. They can eat about 135 kilograms of food in a day.
Baby elephants, called calves, weigh about 90 kilograms when they are born. They live with
their mothers until they are at least 12 years old. Elephants live in groups of about 20 members
each. A group of elephants is called a herd.
Elephants use different parts of their bodies to gather and send information. They use their
mouths and trunks to growl and trumpet. This is how they communicate with each other. They
also use their trunks to smell if other animals are nearby. Elephants use their feet to feel
vibrations through the ground. Scientists think they can feel sounds like the movement of other
animals up to 30 kilometres away.
Sadly, the elephant population worldwide has decreased dramatically. Many of them have been
killed by poachers people who hunt animals illegally to sell their tusks. These tusks are
used to make jewellery and are sold at very high prices. Another problem is that the Earth is
becoming warmer. This is making it more difficult for elephants to have enough water to drink.
Fortunately, many governments are working hard to protect elephants. They are kept in
protected animal reserves. Poachers are tracked down and severely punished.
Circle the correct answer for questions 1-8.
