ABSTRACT

Translation is an activity full of challenges and hazards that may affect renderings
quality. One of the most common and serious problem in translation are linguistic
interferences. This study examines the presence of linguistic interferences among
undergraduate translation students. We wanted to know whether the presence of
linguistic interferences decrease in translations as students go through their
undergraduate translation course and which interferences are common for all
students and which are usually found among beginners. In order to answer these
questions we handed a text written in English to students of three undergraduate
courses years, with the assignment of translating it into Spanish. The text had certain
words and structures that were likely to become linguistic interferences from English
into Spanish. We analyzed the results and we concluded that, as results suggest,
interferences decrease as students go through the course and some errors are
common to both beginners and advance students.
