FCE is a general proficiency examination at Level 82 in the Council of Europe Common European Framework. lt is at
Level I inlhe UK National Oualiflcations Framework, as specified by the Oualiflcations and Curriculum Authority (QCA).
FCE has wjdespread recognition in commerce and industry, e.g. for public contact or secretarial ',/'/ork in banking, airlines,
catering, etc. lt is also recognised as fulfilling English language entry requirements by many higher education institutions and
corporate bodies across the world.
The examination has flve papers: Reading, Writing, Use of English, Listening, speakjng

successfut performance in FCE indicates that candidates can operate independently, with the capacity to achieve most
goals and express themselves on a range oftopics.
The Association of Language Testers in Europe (ALTE) has developed a frameworkwhich cover six levels of language
proticiency aligned to the Council of Europe Common European Framework. Research carried out byALTE has shown
what language learners can typically do at each level.
