PROCEDURE
Verify doctors order
Assess clients hemodynamic status and for signs of complications
Wash hands and wear gloves
Identify the patient
Explain the procedure and how the patient can cooperate
Check integrity of the equipment to be used
Place patient on position of comfort
Position the zero point of the manometer at the level of the right atrium
(Phlebostatic Axis)
Turn the stopcock so the I.V. solution flows into the manometer, filling to about the
20- to 25-cm level
Turn stopcock so solution in manometer flows into patient
Observe the fall in the height of the column of fluid in manometer
Note the CVP by determining the level at which the solution stabilizes or stops
moving downward. Note that CVP may range from 5 to 12 cm H 2O (absolute
numeric values have not been agreed on) or 2 to 6 mm Hg.
Turn the stopcock again to allow I.V. solution to flow from solution bottle into the
patient's veins.
Monitor the infusion at least hourly
Monitor the patient's clinical condition. Note that changes in measurements will
serve as a guide to detect hypovolemia or hypervolemia
Make sure the cap is secure on the end of the CVP monitor and all clamps are
closed when not in use
Document monitored CVP and significant client assessments
