University of Management and Technology, Lahore, Pakistan
The School of Advanced Studies (SAS) at UMT invites call for papers on contemporary issues in
Muslim societies and cultures. The School is a symbol of excellent research based study in Pakistan;
the upcoming nature of this establishment can be seen by academic programs and the bi-annual
journal of this subject area titled Journal of Islamic thought and civilization.
The purpose of this conference is to move away from the myopic comprehension of Islam and
attain a broader understanding of the contemporary issues and challenges faced by the members of
Muslim societies across the world.
This conference hopes to elaborate upon:

The concurrent issues in the Muslim societies requiring better understanding and redressal by
inviting perspectives from multiple social science disciplines.
Recent history and events shaping the lives of contemporary Muslims, and influencing the
social and cultural fabric in areas where Muslim are either in majority or minority.
The normative framework, traditions and rituals existing in various Muslim societiesacross
Africa, the middle east, South Asia, Southeast Asia, Europe and North America, among others,
and the ways in which existing cultures have adopted Islam or adjusted to its influence.
What it means to be a conscious Muslim, the diverse debates regarding the various theological,
theoretical and methodological concerns and theories emerging from the Muslim society,
regarding the above two points. Universal and local ways to be a Muslim. The transnational vs.
the national vision and practices of Islam.

Documents needed are an abstract that should be between 150-250 words, with important
keywords and Curriculum Vitae.
Presenters at the conference will be given the option of getting published in the Journal of
Islamic thought and Civilization.
