Volcano Assignment Part 1

Name: Novarupta
Volcanic Region: Aleutian Arc
Latitude: 58.27 N
Longitude: 155.157 W
Largest Known Eruption: 1912
Most Recent: 1912
Type of Volcano: Caldera with Lava Dome
Size: 400m in diameter, 841m high

The Novarupta Volcano lies right in along the edge of the Ring of Fire. This
ring represents where the Pacific plate is converging with the North American Plate.
This volcano was most likely formed because it is located within a subduction zone.
This is what is causes the convergent boundary along the Aleutian Islands. Since the
Volcano is so close to the sea, this may explain why the eruption was so violent. Also,
it is important to note that Novarupta looks to be a part of a volcanic arc, formed by
the oceanic-continental subduction between the North American and Pacific Plate.
