Title of Lesson Writing on Wikispaces
Standards

ISTE: Standard 1b- Create original works as a means of personal or group

CCSS:
W.1.1: Write opinion pieces in which they introduce the topic or name the book
they are writing about, state an opinion, supply a reason for the opinion, and
provide some sense of closure.
W.1.6: With guidance and support from adults, use a variety of digital tools to
produce and publish writing, including in collaboration with peers.
W.1.8: With guidance and support from adults, recall information from experiences
or gather information from provided sources to answer a question.
ILA: 2.1 Candidates use foundational knowledge to design or implement an
integrated, comprehensive, and balanced curriculum.
ILA: 5.1 Candidates design the physical environment to optimize students use of
traditional print, digital, and online resources in reading and writing instruction.

Objectives

Learning Targets:
Students will be able to publish their writing onto a discussion board.
Students will be able to state their opinion and give reasons to support it.
Students will be able to use print and digital sources to complete writing
assignments.
Students will use technology (discussion boards) to support their writing.

Needed
Materials

Student computers with internet access, wikispace website, youtube, easy poll
website, BrainPop website w/ username and password provided by teacher, graphic
organizers, printer, pencils, clipboards

Procedures

Assessment(s)

Students will be introduced to opinion writing pieces. They would have


already completed in class writing using the Writing Process.
Students will be introduced to the learning objectives/I can statements.
Background Knowledge will be activated by having a class discussion of
what facts are vs. opinions. Students will also be able to view an embedded
YouTube video as a reminder as well.
I do: The teacher will introduce the students to the wikispaces and the page
contents on the wiki spaces. The teacher will complete an example
displaying her opinion of one of the given topics. The teacher will reference
the rubric and graphic organizer throughout her example. Strong adjectives
will be used to help describe her opinion.
We do: The students will then have a discussion within their groups
regarding their opinion about their favorite weather. Each student will
describe their favorite weather and give two reasons to support their opinion.
The group will pick one person to share their opinion with the class.
You do: Students will then have access to the wikispace on their own student
computer. Students will be broken up into each group and assigned an
opinion piece to complete. The groups have been scaffolded and examples
have been modified to meet the needs of students. One person per group will
add to their groups opinion question at a time. They will be given 30
minutes to respond to their opinion question.
Students are asked to respond to at least two of their classmates writing.
Students will then have the opportunity to extend their learning by
participating in a fact or opinion game, brainpop video and activities.
Participation using anecdotal notes.
Students will have their writing assessed by using the provided rubric.
Students will be given points for completing the poll for their opinion topic.
