Advancements in the Joule Thomson (J-T) Cryocooler

A Cryocooler is a mechanical device which generates low temperature due to compression and
expansion of gas. It operates on a closed cycle manner, which means the mass of the working gas is
constant. A cryocooler consists of a compressor, a heat exchanger and an expander . There are two
types of cryocoolers based on the kind of heat exchanger present namely Recuperative where hot and
cold fluids are separated by a solid wall across which heat is exchanged. The second type of
cryocooler is Regenerative where hot and cold fluids are separated by a solid matrix and the heat is
transferred indirectly. J-T cryocooler is a recuperative type cryocooler.
The main parts of the device are storage tank for storing high pressure tank, heat exchanger, J-T
expansion valve and evaporator.
