Politicalleadersurgedtocommittogivingyoung
peopleavoiceinnewgovernment
PoliticalleadersarebeingurgedtoensurethevoicesofyoungAustraliansareheardwithinthe
newparliamentthroughanationalyouthpeakbodythatprovidesyouthinformedpolicyadviceand
amediumforpolicymakerstoconsultandengagewithyoungpeople.
Morethansixtyorganisationsincludingpeakbodies,youthorganisations,communitygroups,
charities,tradeunions,universities,andadvocacygroupsaredemandingurgentactioninthe
finaldaysbeforetheelectiontoensuretheincominggovernmentisreadytofacetherealand
presentchallengesfacingyoungAustralians.
TheopenlettertotheCoalition,Labor,Greensandminorpartieshighlightsthefactthatwhilemore
thanoneinfiveAustraliansareagedbetween12to25,andmorethan10percentofallvotersin
thiselectionwillbeagedunder25,youngAustralianscurrentlyhavenoformalvoiceinthe
policymakingprocessesofgovernment.
ItalsohighlightsthefactthatwhiletherearemanychallengesfacingyoungAustralians,suchas
unemploymentandhousingaffordability,youngpeoplehavethedesire,energyandideastotake
upthechallengeoffindingsolutions.
TimesarehardforyoungAustralians,theopenletterstates.Theyarelikelytobeboththefirst
generationtohavelowerstandardsoflivingthantheirparentsandthefirsttocontributemoreto
governmentspendingthanreceivefromit.
Youthunemploymentandunderemploymentremainworryinglyhigh.Oureducationsystemis
failingtoproperlysupportandtransitionyoungpeopleintothejobsofthefuture.Mostyoung
peoplearebecominglockedoutofthehousingmarketortakingonmoredebtthaneverbeforeto
owntheirownhome.Unfairly,someyoungpeoplehaveevenlessopportunities,justbecauseof
theirbackground,locationoridentity.Manyyoungpeopleareexperiencingseveredisadvantage,
povertyorhomelessnessatragedyinarichcountrylikeours.
ThisamountstoabigproblemforallAustralians.Intheyearstocome,wellrelyonyoungpeople
mosttoleadourcommunities,driveoureconomyandsupportourageingpopulation.Ifyoung
peoplefeelvaluedandconnectedtoourcountry,wewillallbenefit.
YoungAustralianswanttobeheardonmanyissues.Theywanttohelpsolvethechallengesthey
andtheircommunitiesface.ButtheAustralianGovernmentcurrentlysupportsnowaytohear
youngpeopleorengageorconsultwiththem.
Thismustchange.
Theletterconcludesbychallengingallpartiestomakeacommitmentaheadoftheelectionto
ensuringthevoiceofyoungpeopleisheardthroughanationalyouthpeakbodytaskedwith
representingyoungAustralianstogovernment,providingyouthinformedpolicyadvice,and
supportingpolicymakerstoconsultandengagewithyoungpeople.
