Key question/s

- Explain PSE to be completed before the start of next lesson.

Practice.
- Students to collect timber from front desk after first demo.

4. THE BODY
Teacher directed learning?

Independent student inquiry/

learning?

Dem 1 - Marking out chamfer with marking guage.

- Set marking gauge to 11mm.
- Use marking gauge to mark conjoining sides on piece of timber.
- Trace over lines with pencil.
- Connect marks at both ends of timber using a pencil and ruler.
(Should look like a triangle).
Dem 2 - Plane chamfer.
- Place timber in v block. Clamps on either end if there are enough.
- Plane with the grain (Like brushing a cat).
- Check ends are level and surface is flat on top. (Down to the pencil
line).
- Repeat process on another side.
- Select a flat side to mark mortise on.
Dem 3 - Marking out mortise.

Q&A
Discussion
Following instructions

- Measure up 150mm from base. Pencil mark on either side of

chamfer, connect using pencil and ruler.
- Repeat step measuring towards base, 5mm, 30mm, 5mm. (40mm
between lines).
- Find the width of the chamfer, divide by two. With this middle
measurement, mark the middle of the mortise at the top and bottom
of the 30mm section. Join marks.
- Measure 3mm either side of the middle line. (6mm in total).

mortise.
- The next step - Chiselling out mortise (10mm deep)

Q & A.
Packing equipment away

~ 9 mins

Hand tools.
Timber + V Block.
Broom + dustpan

Pack up
- Timber and v block on front desk.
- Tools away.
- Sweep benches and then floor.
- Change shoes + aprons away.
- Leave once dismissed/bell has gone.

- Engagement with activities and information?

Students listened throughout the demonstrations and were eager to start each practical step.
- Did students complete required activities?
Students with correct footwear completed/still completing activities, students without correct footwear completed theory.
- Were students able to grasp how to plane the chamfer?
Most students knew how to use a plane but needed assistance with keeping level with the ends and the sides that were marked out.
- Were students able to grasp mortise measurements?
Measurement were confusing and some students had incorrect measurements. Mortise is to be perfect to ensure tenon fits correctly.
- Behaviour management?
Some students were chatty throughout the demonstrations. Controlled well.
- What I would do differently next time?
Redo the measurements of the mortise. This was confusing to some students.
