Experimental Design Diagrams

A. Will having a cone on the end of the rocket make it go farther? Does the length of the cone
matter?
B. If the cone is longer, then the rocket will go farther because the rocket has more
aerodynamics.
C. Table:

D. Controlled Variables: the number of wings, same launcher, same amount of water in the 2 L,
same size of wings, amount of water in the 20 oz, same angle, same cone material
E. Materials:
− 2 Liter bottle
− 20 oz bottle
− 3 wings- 20 x 15 cm
− duct tape
− 250 ml of water
− 125 ml of water
− material for cones

F. Procedure:
- cut out three fins for the rockets
- tape the 2L and 20 oz bottle together.
- put 250 mL of water into the 2L bottle

- put 125 mL or water into the 20 oz


- mark where the water line is on both bottles (with sharpies)
- tape the fins to the rocket
- cut out the cones
- put finished rocket on launcher, and mark angle given (5)
- tape the cone onto the top of the rocket
- LAUNCH

G. Check your experimental design diagram with your instructor and carry out the experiment.

1. Yes, we were correct, because we said that the longer the cone, the farther it would go, and
that is what happened.
