Torch Run Final Leg Tomorrow

Runners representing Guilford County Law Enforcement agencies and their supporters
will carry the Special Olympics Flame of Hope across Greensboro tomorrow. This
escorted group of around twenty runners will leave Boston Market around 8:30 AM, run
east on Friendly Avenue, turn right on Greene Street, right on Washington Street, and
finish the 5.9-mile final leg of Guilford County around 10:00 AM at the Melvin
Municipal Building. Runners will be identified by the 2010 Torch Run tee shirt.

‘Law Enforcement Torch Run’ is the symbolic name for the year-long effort to raise
money for Special Olympics North Carolina. The purpose of tomorrow’s (literal) run is
simply to raise awareness. Across North Carolina, the Torch Run Final Leg is a 20-day
torch relay throughout the state covering 2,000 miles. The Special Olympics Flame of
Hope is carried by more than 2,000 law enforcement and corrections officers representing
more than 200 agencies across the state, heading towards Raleigh. The Torch Run
culminates with the lighting of the cauldron to signify the official opening of Special
Olympics North Carolina Summer Games next Friday night, June 4, in Time Warner
Cable Music Pavilion at Walnut Creek in Raleigh. Regional games, such as held recently
at Greensboro’s American Hebrew Academy, served to qualify competitors for the state
games.

Earlier Guilford County Sheriff Torch Run events this year included the Polar Plunge at
Emerald Pointe and Cops On Top at Friendly Center Chick Fil-A.

In the most recent fundraising rankings, Guilford County Sheriff’s Office is number one
in North Carolina, leading N.C. State University Police and Winston-Salem Police in
