1
A strong and reliable transportation system is the
backbone of a healthy economy.
Washington’s economy is strong when:
• Freight and goods move by air, rail, road and water
• Our families, friends and neighbors connect with jobs and
their community
• Both people and freight can travel safely and efficiently

2
Washington citizens live and work in the most
trade-dependent state in the U.S.

• Global Gateways
International and national trade flowing through Washington
amounts to over 477 million tons of freight (all modes).
Almost $67 billion of goods were exported in 2008.
• Made in Washington
Our state's manufacturers, agribusiness, construction and
forestry sectors depend on freight systems and produced
over 627,000 jobs and $184 billion in revenue, representing
29 percent of all state revenue in 2008.

• Delivering goods to you

Final delivery of goods produces up to 80 percent of truck
trips in urban areas. Washington's retail and wholesale
trade distribution system supported more than 739,000 jobs
and accounted for $262 billion in revenue (42 percent of
total revenue in the state) in 2008.
