Funds On Hand $136,000 $850,000
Recent Poll 42% 46%
Rep. Melissa Hart is the first Republican to represent this district in decades. This year she’s facing an unexpectedly
strong challenge from Jason Altmire. The Cook Political Report ranks this race “Lean Republican.”

The District
Stretching up from Pittsburgh’s
northern suburbs to the Ohio border,
the 4th District has moved from a
traditionally working-class
Democratic district to a culturally
conservative swing district. It
narrowly supported Bush in 2000
and 2004, but continues to have a
Democratic registration advantage.

About Jason Altmire

A former Capitol Hill staffer,
Altmire spent the last several years
as an executive with the University
of Pittsburgh Medical Center system,
where he became familiar with the
health care system, its connections
with government, and its problems.
In addition to health care, he is focusing his campaign on ethics, veterans’ benefits, and an exit strategy in Iraq.
