    Roland Barthes was a theorist who proposed that all media contains narrative codes to help readers make sense of stories. Specifically, he identified five codes: the action code involving one action causing another; the enigma code for unexplained elements that prompt questioning; the semantic code using connotation to convey additional meaning; the cultural code referencing bodies of knowledge; and the symbolic code involving binary opposites. Barthes also studied ideology as an organized system of ideas presented as a comprehensive worldview.

    Barthes’s Codes
    Action code
    • An element which causes an action by another action
    Enigma code
    • An element that is not explained and needs questioning
    Semantic code
    • An element which is shown to have an often additional meaning by way of
    connotation
    Cultural code
    • An element that refers to science or a body of knowledge that shows meaning
    Symbolic code
    • Binary opposites - one item that can be defined by there binary opposite

    Ideology
    • An organised selection of ideas, shown as a comprehensive vision
