Injury Cycle
• Injuries occur due to many factors, some within
our control, others without.
• These factors also influence injury occurrence
such that it may reduce the risk, or it may
compound the risk.
• Injuries can be seen as therefore occurring in a
cycle, where these factors can influence the
incidence of injuries

Strategies in Prevention
• Preventive measures for injuries include
– Proper warming up, stretching, cooling down
– Proper equipment
– Correct coaching techniques
– Correct biomechanical execution of movement
– Sufficient conditioning
– Properly planned training sessions
– Ensuring safe and comfortable playing environment
Fitness & Health
• High to moderate levels of fitness and health can
also reduce incidence of injuries.
• A fit and healthy individual will have;
– Strong muscles and tendons
– Stable joints and strong ligaments
– Denser and stronger bones
– More efficient cardiovascular system
– Healthier and stronger immune system
– Higher metabolic rate
– Healthier body composition
Biomechanical abnormalities
• Different sports requires different biomechanical
movements
• Unprepared and poorly conditioned athletes can
be at risk of having injuries
• Individual athletes will also have different
biomechanical tendencies for their sports, for
example left and right handed athletes.
• Choice of equipment and training of proper
biomechanics is therefore very important
