Some might argue that RPG PC games have always been popular and cite Warcraft as
evidence of this, but in reality WoW is the exception rather than the rule. With in excess
of 11 million subscribers to Warcraft alone Blizzard is in a commanding position within
the MMORPG market, but that market seldom stands still.

In 2009 very few games were released for the PC that featured roleplaying to any
significant extent. It is true there were some great RPG games released, but there weren't
that many overall.

One of the best PC RPG games of 2009 was Fallout 3. Although for large part the game
plays in the mould of a first person shooter(FPS) rather than a RPG, it still classes as role
playing game primarily as it has a real back story. The game designers (Bethesda) took
some care in developing this sequel and it was nice to see.

Another honorable mention must go to Age of Conan. This is one of the first real
attempts by any gaming house to present a game marketed at adults. The majority of
online RPG gamers are in the 20-25 age bracket but software houses continually play it
safe and avoid offending parents. To some extent this playing it safe philosophy is
understandable as it avoids bad publicity, but there remains a huge market for a game
aimed more solidly at the large market segment which is adult gamers.

Will any software company ever take the risk and market a true 18+ game?

In 2010 we are due for many more releases in the roleplaying genre. Some are already
released like Mass Effect 2, but this is more like a FPS than a real RPG. Dragon Age:
Origins - Awakening is an expansion rather than a new game, but it is a game in which
character development is possible. Another expansion to an existing game is due in the
shape of Fallout: New Vegas. This is another Bethesda release and there is much interest
surrounding its anticipated arrival in late 2010 as the Fallout title has a strong fan
following.

Witcher 2 is also due this year and the development company promise "an in depth and
interesting storyline that will keep a gamer playing for hours". Let us hope they deliver
on their promise.

Probably the most anticipated product by far though is the new Warcraft expansion
"Cataclysm". Aside from adding more levels and two new races into the Warcraft world
the expansion will radically alter the existing maps and terrain of the old world and allow
flying mounts for the first time in those areas. With over 11 million subscribers to protect
Blizzard will no doubt be ensuring that it is a quality product.

With other releases promised like the Marvel Universe MMO, Mars, Two Worlds 2 and
Arcania: A Gothic Tale; 2010 looks like being a great year for return to mass market
popularity for RPG PC games.
