RICE MAGIC

EXPLANATION
Apparatus needed : -Two identical plastic
bottles with cap
-Dry uncooked rice (enough to
filled
two bottles)
-Two chopsticks
-A tray
Steps:
1)Label one bottle ‘light rice’ and the other
‘regular rice’
2)Fill both bottles nearly full with rice
3)Put the lid on the ‘regular rice’ bottle and
shake it up to fluff up the rice
4)Put in extra rice into the ‘light rice’ bottle. To
do this, tap the bottom of the bottle on the
table, to pack down the rice into the bottle to
make room for more. Jabbing the rice a few
times with a chopstick will pack it down
5)Now you are ready to perform
6)Make up a story about how the ‘light rice’
almost weighs nothing at all. Then get an
audience member to put a chopstick into the
‘regular rice’ and you do the same with the
‘light rice’ The audience member will be
unable to carry his bottle, but you will. You
then prove that the both bottles contain the
same amount of rice by pouring the rice onto
the tray. Try to pour your ‘light rice’ a few
seconds before pouring your ‘regular rice’ to
create an illusion that both bottles contain the
Explanation: This trick works due to friction.
As rice is a solid, it will have great difficulty
going up the neck of the bottle. The rice goes
up the neck of the bottle due to the chopstick
having a need for space. Since the packed
rice has very little room to move, it tends to
press against the sides of the bottle. The
chopstick gets wedged between the rice and
the sides of the bottle, it gets trapped and
causes a lot of friction to form and stick to
