DURING READING ACTIVITY -

6.3.2 Analyze how a character’s qualities impact the plot’s resolution of conflict.

Literature Circles
Literature circles provide an avenue for students to engage in critical thinking and
reflection as they read and discuss the assigned text. Discussion is guided by reactions to
the text of the students. Students learn to take responsibility for their own learning as they
break into groups and provide feedback to any particular part of the book they had
connected to. Students share personal feedback with group other members – who then
mesh their knowledge and create new understandings and meanings.

Character Journal
Imagine you are Tomi’s father who has been captured and jailed by American soliders.
Write a personal journal about what you are experiencing the internment camp. Write
about your experiences including: what you see, what you are doing, how you are being
treated, what you are thinking of, etc.
* Create it so it would look like a notebook/journal from that time. (Crumple & stain
paper, artistic, etc.)

Graffiti Board
After reading some chapters, students will reflect and extract examples of Japanese
culture exhibited by Tomi’s family. Using these examples, each student will illustrate
their understanding of this culture on each corner of a piece of butcher paper. Students
will then share their corner with their group and with the entire class.
