MATERIALS
AUTHENTIC AND NON-AUTHENTIC

AUTHENTIC MATERIAL
material which has not been
created for the classroom.
It can be thought of as original
and unedited
Examples: newspapers and
magazines, business reports,
leaflets and brochures and novels.
The main advantages of using authentic
materials are:
as a study- can get a first hand idea of how
to apply the English knowledge to real,
everyday situations.
Authentic material has such huge diversity
that a learner can always find something
relevant to their needs or interests.
CONTINUE:
new authentic material is being
created everyday.
have a positive effect on learner
motivation.
provide exposure to real language.
relate more closely to learners ' needs.
support a more creative approach to
teaching.
Disadvantages of using authentic material:
often contain difficult language
unneeded vocabulary items
complex language structures, which
causes a burden for the teacher in lower-
level classes.
may be too culturally biased
too many structures are mixed, causing
lower levels have a hard time decoding the
texts.
NON-AUTHENTIC
MATERIAL
material which has been designed for the
classroom.
usually edited to make it appropriate to a
particular level of English.
It's a very effective form of learning and
covers categories.
Example: word searches, dialogues and
worksheets.
CONTINUE:
Correctly designed non-authentic material
has been built with a teaching idea or topic
in mind.
focus on helping the learner to understand a
specific point of knowledge relating to
grammar or vocabulary.
The English learner who wants to
understand an exact concept can use non-
authentic material as a strong and useful
tool, and then move back into authentic
material for the application.
