Grammar Points

Previously we saw how no can be used to nominalize verbs and phrases. This week we are using it to
nominalize adjectives.
This use is quite common in spoken Japanese and can often be translated as ‘things’ or ‘ones.’
In the conversation we used:

辛い・karai spicy 辛いの・karai no spicy things, spicy ones

どっちのセーターが好きです Docchi no setā ga suki desu ka? Which sweater do you like?
か？
赤いのが好きです！ Akai no ga suki desu! I like the red one!

Formation

i adjectives
赤いの akai no the red one, red things
赤かったの akakatta no the ones that were red

na adjectives
上手なの jōzu na no the skilled one
jōzu datta no the one that was skillful

Also, there were several interesting words that appeared in this conversation which deserve some attention.

ねぇ・Nē
This is an extremely casual way of getting another person’s attention. Although it is used by both sexes,
overuse is considered feminine.

じゃん・jan
This is short for じゃない？ ja nai “isn’t it? “
It’s an casual tag question used in colloquial Japanese.
This is not Standard Japanese. It began life as regionalism in the Kanto area, but is now used throughout
Japan. However, it is generally shunned in Kansai due to the rivalry of Osaka-ben and Tokyo-ben.

ぜ
This is a male sentence-final particle used for emphasis and assertion. Be careful with this one, it has a
coarse tone to it and at times can be crass.

わからないー＞わかんない wakarani ー＞wakannai

This is another Kanto regionalism. It’s a casual contraction for ‘I don’t know.’
